Sitting In The Aisle: Superman

Superman 10/10

Spoilers. Finally! A good Superman movie! I have watched every Superman film. I made a list years ago of who I thought the best one was. I watched the cartoon in various forms ranging back to the damn 1940s. I am a huge Batman fan but have always hoped that a Superman movie would give me the feeling that the animated series in the 90s did. When I heard that James Gunn was writing and directing this I got happy and knew I had to see it in a theater because that man has the ability to make me give a damn about characters I didn't know existed or barely cared about. The fact that I liked Superman and Clark Kent equally was a fresh feeling. I sat in that theater feeling like a damn kid experiencing this character for the first time.

When I watched the previous movies with Superman dude looked the part in costume but not as Clark. This guy actually looks different when he is in and out of costume. The way he talks and movies changes. And he is helpful! Superman hasn't given me the feeling of being helpful in decades! He will fight a huge battle and destroy the city but he didn't feel like he would save you from a fire. This guy saves a squirrel. And he gets his ass kicked.

This starts off with him beaten and bloody calling for Krypto to come and rescue him. I am pretty much gonna gush a lot about this. I can't wait till this is streaming because I know that I'm gonna watch it repeatedly. I need to talk about Lois. Loved her. Everything I really liked about this is because it reminded me of the animated series. That show gave enough time for people to be fleshed out and things that followed just tried to chase that experience. Lois in this is not a damsel in distress and acts like a reporter. She is not stubborn for the hell of it. Hell, even Jimmy is useful! This is the first time I liked Jimmy and wondered what he was up to.

Lex Luthor may have played his part too well because my lady hated his guts. This dude was the ultimate hater. This dude was willing to not just let the city crumble and the people die to beat Superman, but he was going to let the planet split in half just to say that he is better.

The Justice Gang were actually interesting! I thought that they would be used for a moment and as jokes. Not really. Mr. Terrific was so damned good that I hope he gets his own series. I'm being dead serious. He was that good. This movie had a lot of stuff happening. Giant monsters. Alternate dimensions. Evil super villains. Supergirl! A lot. But it works. Somehow this all worked and made me excited for more of Superman and everyone else in this. Hell, I ended up buying a damn new Superman shirt. That makes like five of them that I own now. If this is one of the first steps into a new DCEU its was a remarkable step and I'm looking forward to what comes.
