Curtain Call: The Piano Lesson

The Piano Lesson 7/10

This past weekend Cam took me to see this play in Pasadena. The last play was super good and this one was also good but, my god, it was long. This lady Berniece lives with her daughter, Maretha, and her uncle, Doaker. One day her brother Boy Willie shows up with a guy named Lymon and a truck full of watermelon to sale. Boy Willie wants to sell all the watermelon and head back to buy some land. Lymon is on the run from the law.

Berniece says that she has seen the ghost of someone and the daughter sees him as well. Boy Willie does not care and plans on selling a piano that is a family heirloom made by their enslaved grandfather. Boy Willie wants to use the piano and get some money and leave. Berniece refuses to let it leave the house.

The first half of this play was amazing. If it had ended there I wouldn't have been mad. After intermission there is a lot of yelling and complaining by Boy Willie. It got exhausting after a while and I was sitting in my seat like “Oh, my god will he just shut up?!” Finally a character says that but it was way too late. I have never seen a play this long in my life and would rather not. Two hours plus intermission is enough. If Cam hadn't explained the story to me I would have been super lost at the end. This was a good show with good acting and I loved the set. I have a thing for sets that don't change it seems.
