The Review: X-Men 97

X-Men 97 (9/10)

After the death of Professor Charles Xavier Cyclops is now leading the X-Men. Well. In the first episode Cyclops was cooler than he ever was on the old cartoon. It took Charles death for the government to sanction the team for battles. They save this kid, Roberto da Costa, from this mutant haters (Friends of Humanity). Seriously. Cyclops fucking power slides across the ground! I can't get over that shit. These people are using Sentinel tech so the team is like “The fuck they get that from?!” They are looking for Trask but have to get to Gyrich first. These are a bunch of names I have not heard in years by the way. He wont talk so Jean Grey is like “Lemme see somethin'” and gets in his mind box. She sees a bunch of honked up stuff but they are able to find Trask who has an assload of Sentinels and a Master Mold. Cyclops and Jean let the team know that they plan on leaving because Jean is pregnant. Magneto shows up and is like “Guess what? Charles left me in charge!”

Magneto is suddenly saving humans as well as mutants but everyone is like “Dude, you evil as hell!” Rogue is like “He not so bad” because they had a thing. Due to Magneto's powers he is the only person that can touch her. Gambit is like “Well...that sucks.” Magneto needs to face the UN for his crimes against humanity when the place is attacked by the FOH. The X-Cutioner shows up and he has a gun that can de-power mutants. Storm ends up taking the hit meant for Magneto and now she can't do weather things. Jean goes into labor (she pregnant) and doctors don't wanna help mutants give birth so Rogue snatches his knowledge and does it herself. That is a great use of her abilities by the way. Now that the UN thinks Magneto is good he wants to talk about the all mutant nation of Genosha joining them. Back home the team is with the new baby when Jean shows up at the door. What?! She upstairs and just had a baby!

This new Jean is the real one and the other is Madelyne Pryor. If you are not balls deep into the comics this would just be confusing as hell. Same with other characters that appear and things that happen. Cyclops is like “Uh...what do I do?” Pryor is a clone of Jean with all her memories and such as well as powers created by Mister Sinister. The baby gets kidnapped and infected with a virus so Bishop (he there too) has to take him to the future to be cured and taken care of.

Forge shows up and helps Storm get her powers back while Jubilee goes to Mojo World. This is the weakest of the episodes and not really worth talking about. Jubilee sucks. She has always sucked. Her future version sucks. I just don't care about her.

Jean is all confused and ends up kissing Wolverine. He is down but knows it is wrong and she is just going through some shit right now. Later she finds out that Scott and Pryor are using telepathy to chat with one another. That is their thing that they did and Scott just using it with another woman. Scott's a dog by the way. If you have read the comics this dude slangs his thang with multiple women and always comes back to Jean. Rogue and Gambit arrive in Genosha and it is a mutant paradise. The country wants Magneto to lead but eh says he will only do so if Rogue is with him. Rogue finally lest Gambit know that she and Magneto had a thing and he is like “A'ight. Bet.” She later kisses Magneto at the party and has second thoughts. Too late. Cable (who is the adult version of Nathan that Pryor gave birth to) shows up to warn everyone but moments later Sentinels shows up and start murdering folks. Gambit ends up sacrificing himself to save everyone and it looks cool as hell. I was never a massive Gambit fan but was very shocked to see him die.

Meanwhile in space...

Xavier is still alive and wants to get married to a bird woman. Bird woman's sister is like “He not one of us and he sucks!” and says he must go through a process to remove all memories of Earth from his mind. That is dumb. Your people dumb. Xavier yanks them all into Psychicville and schools them. He gets a flash of Gambit dying and decides he needs to head back home. This episode had Gladiator in it and that was cool because he rocks ass. Storm gets her powers back on Earth after defeating the crow lady in her mind.

The rest of the season is pretty damn good and no episode gets wasted (besides the Jubilee one). I would have given this a 10/10 if not for that but considering this is a ten episode series they can not afford to have nonsense episodes like that. Especially with all the heavy and important things going on at the time. This show had everything. It had Apocalypse. It had Wolverine getting his adamantium yanked out his skin. Cyclops being cool. Storm being recognized as an Omega level mutant. Dozens of cameos from other properties (even if just for a moment it was still cool). Morph being far more powerful than I imagined. Just a cool ass follow up to the original series. Hell, I still have the Phoenix Saga on a VHS I recorded in school.
