It has been so long since I have seen a movie in a theater and I have missed it so much. L. and I tried out the new Landmark near me that changes to something else every few years. I have zero complaints about the new changes inside because them seats felt great and the popcorn was very good. Just confused about having tickets taken or purchased in the same spot as buying food. Super bottle neck because of that. I should probably talk about what we watched. It was A Quiet Place Day One. I have not seen the first movie but watched so many reaction videos that I feel like I have. I did see the second film and liked it though I had questions that after seeing this one will never be answered. I will try to explain why I feel this way later.
So this lady named Sam is in hospice dying of cancer. She used to write but has pretty much given up hope and just wants to chill with her cat that at times seems to be so lucky/magical that I questioned if it were real or not. The hospice has a trip planned for the city and Sam wants pizza. They see this sad ass puppet show and in the back you see military vehicles and hear sirens. The guy running the hospice, Reuben, gets a call and says they need to leave the city. Sam is pissed and wants her pizza (find out why that is so important later) until suddenly there are explosions all over the place. She gets knocked out and wakes up about to scream in a theater full of people until this guy Henri puts his hand over her mouth to keep her from screaming. This dude starts freaking out and Henri ends up killing him on accident (should have been on purpose). The cat accidentally rings a small bell and a damn monster bursts into the theater. These things are massive. Helicopters fly overhead telling everyone to be quiet. One of the issues with this is that even by the time the sequels happen no one ever mentions how they discovered this rule so quickly, let alone on day one.
Reuben ends up getting killed by one of monsters while trying to stop a boiler from making noise and Sam leaves to head to Harlem. The military says they are gathering people on boats because the creatures can't swim (how they know this so fast?!). A crowd of people start slowly walking there but some are dragging luggage and shuffling. Of course the aliens hear them and start slaughtering people left and right. Sam loses her cat, Frodo, and finds some kids hiding in a fountain. Creatures can't hear past water so they good. Frodo finds this English dude that was drowning in a subway named Eric. I didn't know this man's name until the credits. Frodo takes him and they find Sam and she wants nothing to do with taking care of this man.
They end up in flooded tunnels and have all kind of jacked up adventures with her taking care of him. He does find medicine for her and takes her to the pizza spot she loves and used to go to with her dad before he too died of cancer. The pizza place is gone but he finds some at another place. After some more bonding they spot the last boat leaving. Sam gives Eric her sweater and has him swim to the boat with Frodo. Sam starts walking down the street listening to music and smiling, she takes her headphones out and lets the music blare as aliens approach her.
This was a good movie but I still have questions about these damn creatures and how they got to Earth. Did they arrive in ships or just crash here? How did we find out about their hearing and lack of swimming abilities? Do they just wanna kill humans or eat them? Like, I would feel better knowing if they had a leader and a goal. The hard part for me was hearing what Sam and Eric were saying at certain points and wanting more of a backstory for her since the story was so focused on her. Also, they will not answer these questions in the next movie or two. I know this from watching movies like Terminator, The Matrix, and The Purge. This show needs a series but I'm not exactly clamoring for that. And its hard eating popcorn in a theater where the whole damn movie is quiet. And I am glad the magical cat was not as annoying as I thought it would be. I really thought it would be meowing and knocking things over the whole time.
