The Review: Invisible Ghost (1941)

Invisible Ghost 8/10

L and I watched this crazy ass movie on Youtube from this channel called Full Moon Matinee. This guy introduces classic movies and some have no commercials. This movie called Invisible Ghost was better than it really had any right to be. The host made it seem like it wouldn't be that good but we watched anyway because it was only 63 minutes long. I got upset at the start because as the host stated, there are no ghosts in this movie and the font and image used during the credits looked like a werewolf. Still, besides that trickery this was a good movie.

As this movie began I said “Automatic 1/10!” because a Black man was on screen. Then it became a 2/10 because he spoke and wasn't all “Yessuh, massah.” This big ass place is owned by this man named Kessler. His wife vanished a few years ago after having an affair or something and every year for their anniversary he pretends to have dinner with her. His daughter Virginia lives with him and has a boyfriend named Ralph. He is kind of annoying.

There is a new helper at the mansion that is mouthy as hell and complains a lot. There is also a garderner who grabs and leaves the house with food when no one is looking. He runs through the woods and heads down the worlds most dangerous stairs and Mrs. Kessler is down there in bed! No, he not having the sex with her. But he found her after the accident and feeds her but for whatever reason won't take her home. She is damn near a zombie and says she wants to go home. The gardener heads home to his wife who knows about the secret hidden woman and over bread and soup and discuss not taking her back home. How come?!

Ralph had stumbled in on Kessler having his pretend dinner and Virginia explains it to him. Ralph leaves and that mouthy new help says that she used to bang down with Ralph and got this job to be near him. Ralph is like “Oh, you crazy crazy!” and tells her to leave him along because he wants to be with Virginia. The butler Evans hears all of this and keeps it to his Black self. During the night Kessler is in his room and his Spider Sense starts tingling. He looks out the window and sees his wife looking like a super ghost. Suddenly he grabs his temple, raises a hand like a vampire, and starts walking down the stairs. He walks into the room the helper is staying and she waits until he is millimeters away from her before she screams. The next day Evans finds her dumb, dead body.

The police show up and since this is the 1940s they arrest Virginia's boyfriend Ralph. I shit you not, his arrest, trial, and execution take place in two minutes. L appreciated the speed. I was like “Well, damn!” So in true soap opera style Ralph has a twin brother. Looks just like him but has some gray hair on the sides. The brother is named Paul. I thought Virginia was gonna hook up with him but that doesn't happen. Mrs. Kessler starts appearing more. Apparently the lock on that gardeners basement door is made of toilet tissue. Its time for another murder now. This time the gardener gets killed. Evans the butler is like “All these white folk can't keep dying in this house!” Police show up again and are like “Come the fuck on with the murders!”

Crazy thing. The gardeners wife shows up to look at his body and this man wakes up! Kessler comes running in and after the gardener sees him dies of...fright? I mean, that would jack you up though. The police decide to stay around because this place loves crime. Mrs. Kessler ends up coming into the house when cops are there and they take her to another room. Meanwhile Evans is being interrogated by the police after the power goes out. The cops bring Mrs. Kessler into the room and Kessler immediately goes into a trance. Oh, I forgot to mention Kessler went into a trance at another point and almost killed his daughter. Hell, Evans thought he killed the replacement help!

So Kessler wants to go after his wife but the cops watch as he tries to murder another cop. They seriously just stand there and watch. Mrs. Kessler in the other room drops dead and then Kessler snaps out of it. The end. For real. I wasn't mad. I didn't need to see his two minute trial or anything. I felt bad for Virginia because she didn't even get to see her mother come back. She was in her room locked away from her crazy father while her missing mother died and her fiance was killed for a murder her father committed. This was a crazy and fun ass movie you can watch anywhere.
