The Review: Barry Season 4

Barry Season Four 10/10

Full of spoilers! Not sure why I never did a review for the third season, but I assure you that I watched it. I'm gonna try to recall everything that happened since I finished this months ago. Barry is in prison and I thought that there was no possible way that this show could go this many seasons let alone make the final one the best. Barry tries to contact his old acting teacher, Gene, whose fiancĂ© he murdered for forgiveness as well as his ex, Sally who will be going through all manner of chaos herself. Gene wants to get some of his old fame back by cashing in on the murder of Janice and knowing that Barry was one of his acting students. Sally is trying to come to grips with the fact that she was sleeping with a murderer. Barry is losing his shit. His former friend Fuches is sent into the same prison as Barry and thinks he will be killed only for Barry to beg for forgiveness.

Sally heads back home and her relationship with her mother is trash. She is recovering from her viral video, her show tanking, and finding out Barry is a killer. She ends up meeting up with Barry in prison and says she feels safe around him. Fuches begins to build a gang to protect him and Barry even though he is informing for the FBI. Sally tries to get a form of her career back but is warned that things may not work out for her anymore. NoHo Hank and Cristobal try to go legitimate with a construction business. Hank hires a gang to kill Barry while he wants nothing to do with Barry anymore. While being interrogated Barry spots a guy and says he is there to kill him. The police are baffled until the guy blows his own hand off and a killer in the ceiling starts shooting everyone but Barry. Barry ends up killing the guy and escaping prison.

Now that Barry is free Fuches get beaten by the police who think he helped him. Gene freaks out and is placed in a cabin...and ends up shooting his own son thinking it was Barry. Yeah. Its fucked up. Hank gets his entire new successful crew together for a photo in a silo filled with sand when suddenly they all start sinking. Hank saves Cristobal at the last second. Cristobal is horrified to find out that Hank planned this and doesn't really want to go legit. Cristobal leaves the house and is assassinated as Hank watches. Hank is full villain now. Barry finds his way to Sally and they do a flash forward where they are living together in the Midwest somewhere and have a kid. I thought this was all a dream sequence. Its for reals. Barry is paranoid as hell. Sally works as a waitress and bangs a scummy coworker. Their son seems okay but Sally also gives him booze to make him sleep. Gene returns to the US after being in hiding for the last eight years and wants to work on the Barry biopic.

Barry heads back to LA to go kill Gene. Fuches is a badass now and out of prison and decides to work with Hank who is successful now. Fuches says Barry is not a threat anymore. Barry gets to Gene's house but is then captured by Janice's father. Hank turns on Fuches and tries to kill him but fails so he decides to just work with him. Sally heads to LA with their kid and is kidnapped at Gene's house waiting for him. Janice's dad, Jim, messes with Barry's mind and it appears that Barry was just being used as a killer. Barry gets free and Hank tells him to visit or else Sally and their son will die. After an insane shootout the only survivors are Barry, Sally, their kid, and Fuches. Gene ends up being a suspect in the murder of Janice so there go all his movie dreams. I forgot to mention this but Barry has gone full bible and after Sally suggest he turns himself in he says the fact that they all survived means he is redeemed. The next day they leave Barry and he freaks out and heads to Gene's to find them. He gets there and Gene's agent is there. Gene arrives and shoots Barry right in the head. The end. Years later Barry's son watches a movie based on his life and it states that Gene got life in prison and Barry got buried with full military honors.

This was a chopped up recap but this season was so damned good. I am glad that Barry didn't make it out of this show with a happy ending because he was a killer no matter how likable he could be. I was worried after the first couple of seasons of this just becoming slap-sticky and being dragged out until it was bad. They did this entire show perfectly. The writing, the comedy, and the action. It made this a pretty much perfect series.
