This movie was butt. I randomly watched this with L. and I knew it would be bad just by the poster. That and the fact that the star of it did absolutely no interviews or anything about it. Just dropped that Captain America stinker and this movie was never brought up. This movie starts off three years after something called The Event. 95% of the human population was killed and people have to live above 8000 feet to be safe from these things called Reapers. Why don't the Reapers go above 8000 feet? I'm still not quite sure and neither is the movie. So this starts off with this kid named Hunter goofing around outside when he starts getting chased by something that sounds like dubstep. He makes it across this line and is out of danger. His father Will tells him that he needs to not do that and it is important for him to live. Meanwhile this seemingly crazy woman named Nina is firing shots with bullets fresh out the microwave at something repeatedly.
Hunter wants to explore and get out of the town. Will knows that is a stupid idea but Katie, a neighbor, knows that this must be rough for a kid. Hunter is, like, the only kid there in town. At night Hunter starts having problems breathing. Every night this happens until Will runs out of oxygen canisters for him. This shit happened each night and suddenly he is like “Oh, I need more oxygen for my son! Time to put some lives in danger!” In case you're wondering where his wife is, she went on a exploration with Nina and got killed by the monsters. Now Will wants to head into town miles away to get more air for his son and wants Nina to come. She says no but comes. Katie comes because plot. Hunter wants to go but he is soft as baby shit and got breathing issues so he needs to sit his goofy ass down. Kids with breathing issues in movies always wanna be active. Sit and live!
So they go out walking and Nina has a tracking device she made that warns if Reapers are close by a mile. That don't matter because they run fast as hell and a mile might as well be ten feet. Will says they can go through a mine he claims to know everything about and be safer. They outrun a monster using a ski lift and make it to the mines. One level is closed so they have to go further down putting them in super direct danger. Will knew this and still had them come. They of course get found by a monster and make it to relative safety until Katie decides to be dumb and runs out into an open cave. Monster snatches her up and kills her. Will is like “Nooo! I just found out she wanted to fuuuck!” Literally seconds later they find an exit, a cabin, and working, gas fueled, clean ass truck and drive to town. They get into a hospital and Will starts grabbing a few canisters for his son. Load the fuck up, you jackass! He is ready to go home but Nina wants to stop at her lab and try something. He doesn't want to because he is an asshole.
They go to her lab and he finds out that Nina had a husband and kids that were killed by the Reapers. He feels bad now. She tries adding something to bullets and it doesn't pierce Reaper skin until she has an idea and it works. Nina decides to stay and Will is all happy driving home until a tire blows and flips his truck. He is knocked out for what appears to be days. He treks back to town and is surrounded by Reapers until Nina and her magic bullets show up. They let others know they now have a way to kill them and everyone is happy. Nina and Will discover the Reapers are robots of some sort which is bullshit. Will asks where they come from and she looks to the sky as three meteors or something are flying through the sky. The end.
This movie gave us a lot of questions but I also knew that this was the type of film where there would be no answers. The Reapers only killed humans and no animals. They didn't eat them. They didn't sleep. They just killed. They tracked people by their breath. Still no explanation as to why they couldn't go higher than 8000 feet from what I can recall. Hell, we were pretty sure at the end that one of the Reapers was above the line waiting for Will. They never even explained how people found out that you could survive at 8000 or above and who placed the markers for safety everywhere. I told my lady that I was gonna give this a 3/10 and she thought that was harsh. I think I am being kinda generous. Any higher would mean I would have this on in the background or think of someone I could suggest this to. This is not a movie I could tell anyone I know to watch.
