This was an incredible series. I found out online a couple of months ago that this show existed that was gonna be on AMC and then dumped and Tubi picked it up. Me and my lady decided to check this series out and I was thoroughly invested in this. I was in such a hurry to finish that I accidentally skipped an episode. This takes place in 2023 and this guy Demascus who goes to a therapist named Dr. Bonnetville. He is trying to figure out who and what he is. She tells him to give this new virtual therapy device called D.I.R.T (Digital Immersive Reality Therapy). Using this he gets to go into his subconscious and experience other versions of reality featuring him and people he knows (or possibly don't really exist.
In this first episode his sister says that her dude is beating her up and she is pregnant. Demascus heads there with his friend Redd, a newly freed prisoner, and his uncle Forty. They confront the boyfriend and it turns out that shit is all wrong and mixed up and the next thing you know a gun goes off and someone ends up dead. Demascus wakes up in the therapist office and is like “That was weird. I don't even have a sister.” He meets up with his girlfriend who thinks they met because of an algorithm. She tries to get freaky with him but he's not feeling it which upsets him. He meets up with this lady named Naomi at an art show and he starts fantasizing about her. His therapist asks why he didn't tell Naomi about his girlfriend Budhi and it is said he may have a fear of commitment. Demascus' mother passed away and he may have this fear because of an overbearing mother.
I don't want to sit here and cover every single episode because I would love for more people to check this show out on Tubi. Its free. You don't need to make an account. Every episode is less than half an hour long and it flies by. The acting, music, and the style this is shot in is awesome. This is the kind of series I wanna watch. I love movies like this. Starring Black people where its not about being a thug or some dark shit. Just a great sci-fi show. AMC dropped the ball by not airing this show meanwhile they cranking out trash like Mayfair Witches and so far this miserable, confusing Talamasca.
TV needs more shows like this. There is something I say to my lady when she talks about the upcoming Christmas movies. Just based on the names of the characters I think “This could have been for anyone and they just threw Black people in it.” This show did not feel like this. With a cast of another race its a whole 'nother series. It is as if the older I get the more I really do understand that representation does matter. I used to roll my eyes at it. Kids will never know because more shows and cartoons have Black people in them but growing up in the 80's there were a couple of Black shows and they were about church or how hard it is being Black or drugs. You would see a Black person on a show and they were the only one there. It sucked. So when I see a show like this that should be in its third or fourth season relegated to Tubi so AMC could save some money it really fucking sucks. I'm not asking for another season because though I would like to know how this series would've ended I'm not sure if the cast would be up for it. Check this out. You will not regret it. I won't mention that the main character reminded me of myself a little too much...
