Documentality: The Alabama Solution

Alabama Solution 9/10

This was a rough watch. The makers of this Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman went to this prison called Easterling in Alabama back in 2019 and there was a festival and everything seemed all nice and cool. There is church shit, barbecue, and love music. Then this one prisoner points out that its all bullshit. Turns out he was incredibly right. Filmed over years prisoners use their cell phones to record and document everything that is going on. I am not gonna pretend to be shocked that they have access to cell phones because my lady has shown me full on Tik Tok videos from inmates.

These inmates are subjected to things no human should have to go through. I watched seeing people in prison for murders and thought “Why not just kill them?” If you are gonna make another human being suffer that much just end their life. But then you couldn't use them as slaves and workers. It reminded of how years ago a list was released showing all the things made by inmates (airlines, phone companies, Victoria's Secret, McDonald's, Starbucks). I am all for rehabilitation into society and serving time for crimes but being beaten to death for sport or blinded for showing what is happening in these prisons are neither of those things. Its just fucked up. Two particular men Melvin “Bennu Hannibal Ra-Sun” Ray and Robert Earl “Kinetik Justice” Council are fighting for justice and are being attacked and tortured for it. There is a certain level of inhumanity you have to lack to work at these places or make laws that directly harm these people for profit. It was a really hard to watch documentary and I couldn't imagine ever being one of these men and not killing myself immediately.
