Documentality: Three Docs In One!

Bring Me the Beauties: A Model Cult 6/10

Over the last few weeks (pre Rhode Island vacation)
L and I watched a few documentaries. This was the first. This former male model named Hoyt Richards ends up joining a spiritual cult. At one point he was the most famous male model in the world (I realized that other than Fabio who appears in this I barely know male models but knew most women). He left his home after being approached by the guy named Frederick von Mierers. This guy rounded up attractive people and had them help sell crystals and cassette tapes. Frederick is a weird dude and gathers everyone as they party and try to explain their beliefs to everyone. Its all nuts and I won't bother describing cause it sounds like every other weird cult. Past lives. Egypt. The usual. It wasn't like he had all his money stolen or was told what to do with his life really. This “cult” didn't seem all that bad honestly. Watched on HBO.

Earth Wind And Fire 8/10

This was a cool ass documentary. Turns out that I have seen this band live twice but knew nothing about them. They cover the life of lead singer
Maurice White and how he went from a drummer in a well known trio to making a band so weird that people just stared at them. White practiced meditation and formed three things he wanted for the band that would become Earth, Wind, and Fire: reaching a universal audience (not just Black people), evolving consciousness, and to change the world as a whole. There is a lot of footage from previous interviews with White along with ones of surviving band members, White's children, and band members. This is full of great music and footage. It feels kinda long at two hours but is well worth watching. Available on HBO.

Big Girls Wanted: Escaping Pearadise 3/10

I don't think this was for me. We watched all three parts and I was waiting on the part where I felt bad for what was happening. I'm sure someone who watched this and reading my post thinks I'm horrible. So this weird ass German dude that is into big woman (he likes minimum 500lbs) named
Stefan Wilhelmy. This is a body positive environment in Las Vegas for women. He is also accused of raping, assaulting and overfeeding these women. One dies. Few more end up in hospital. One gets pregnant with twins but it made it seem like she showed up pregnant by someone else but I guess not? A woman online that hates this dude is shown far too much because she was just so grating to listen to. Actually this entire thing was filled with annoying people. Stefan seemed really good at attracting victims and the women were good at being found. Hell, with the right hashtag he was able to attract them. So yeah. Couldn't suggest you watch this.
