A couple of weeks ago L and I watched this crazy movie called Practical Magic. I had heard of this film but did not know who was in it or what it was about. In the late '90s so I knew it was going to be weird. This starts off with a witch being hung named Maria Owens. She ends up surviving when the rope snaps after she steps off and all the towns people take off running. The father of her baby ends up dying and she makes a spell to keep herself from ever falling in love. Over time this jacked up spell ends up becoming a curse and now any man who falls in love with her descendants will die after this crazy little beetle starts chirping. We fast forward to these two sisters named Sally and Gillian and one day their mother hears the bug and their dad ends up dying. I forget how the mom dies actually. So they move in with their two crazy aunts named Francis and Jet. These two odd ladies are all about magic and letting the kids enjoy themselves while also dealing with everyone in town who thinks that they are witches and talks trash to the little girls.
Gillian wants to fall in love and ends up in all kind of crazy relationships and what appear to be orgies and such. Sally ends up falling in love with this dude and they end up having two daughters and then one morning she hears the bug. She freaks out and starts tearing up the floorboard to find his thing and her husband ends up dying. It turns out that the aunt's knew about her falling for this guy cause they put some kind of spell to make them fall in love. One day Gillian calls her sister Sally (who has had two children and lost her husband and I don't think this woman has seen her since she first ran out to go have sex with the rest of the country). She falls in love with this dude named Jimmy who is obviously crazy and very dangerous. Sally goes to save her sister Gillian while being held hostage by this guy who has a gun and plans on branding her with his ring in the backseat of the car. Sally spikes his drink and as he's beating and choking Gillian he ends up dying.
They end up bringing his body back to the house and use a spell to bring him back to life and he comes back and immediately starts attacking them so they crack him in the head with a frying pan and kill him once again and bury him in the yard. One night the sisters and the aunts who have no idea that there's a body in the yard are having drinks and it turns out it's the same drink they gave Jimmy and they all start saying mean shit to one another. The aunts are like “Okay what's going on here?” and then tell them to clean up their own mess. An investigator named Gary ends up showing up in town and asking about where Jimmy is cause he's looking to arrest him. They try lying and doing all kind of things but Sally for some reason can't bring herself to be dishonest with this guy. Plus now they're dealing with the spirit of Jimmy who makes all these flowers grow where they buried his body and starts leaving frogs and all kind of nonsense around.
Jimmy spirit ends up taking over Gillian and they try to exercise him out of her body with the help of local towns women. It seems to work but his spirit ends up taking over Gillian's body even more and Gary ends up seeing it and now believes all this crazy stuff. So Jimmy tries to grab Gary and gets his hand burned on a star and then get sucked up into the star and he's done. I think that's how it went. I left out the part where Sally realized that the dream man that she had thought of when she was a little girl that had all these qualities that no one man could have are all possessed by Gary. He has eyes at a different colors can ride a horse backwards and has a star. Gary ends up taking the suspicion of the sisters off of the case and comes back to town to hang out with Sally because they in love. The townspeople are all happy and like “Yay we have witches here!” as the sisters the aunts and the daughters all float from the rooftop. This movie was crazy in a way that '90s movies used to be crazy. This movie seems like it's a combination of romance, horror, domestic violence, and Magic. It is really all over the place but I liked it.
