The Review: Beastars

Beastars 9/10

Full of spoilers. A few days ago I saw that this animated series called Beastars was on Netflix and checked it out just because I liked the way the art looked. I knew nothing about the story going in and by the end of the first episode knew that I was gonna finish this. This takes place in a world of nothing but animals. There are hundreds of types but they are pretty much broken down into herbivores and carnivores. The high school is the main setting for this as well so there is puh-lenty of drama in that regard. The main characters are a wolf named Legoshi and a white rabbit named Haru.

An alpaca is murdered and eaten by a carnivore and it shakes the shit out of the school since there is already a shaky alliance between the two groups. Legoshi does the lighting for the drama club which is run by the star, a red deer named Louis. Louis is hiding the fact that his leg is broken from the rest of the school because he wants to eventually become the Beastar. From what I gather it is an animal who will lead them all to a greater world or something. One night while walking back to his room Legoshi gets the scent of Haru and pounces on her ass clutching her with his super wolf side trying its best to not eat her but really wanting to. Haru herself wants to die but not at the same time. She is ready for it if it happens though. Someone distracts Legoshi and he scratches Haru's arm as she escapes.

Legoshi later has to see Haru to get flowers for an event not knowing she is the only member of the gardening club. She doesn't remember him from the attack since she never saw who it was and it was dark. Legoshi steps into a room with her and she starts undressing thinking he is there for sex saying she has never been with a carnivore before. Oh, by the way. She has slept with a lot of guys at the school. Not shaming her for it. But she has and talks about how it is the only time she feels empowered and in control. Plus she realizes that as a small bunny that everyone instinctively wants to protect her and she hates it.

By the time this show wraps up I had almost every question I had regarding how this world worked. Since they don't eat each other they eat mostly soy based products, fruits, vegetables, and eggs. There is a sequence showing a chicken who makes extra money selling her eggs to make extra money. There are animals that do eat meat on the black market and the shit is dark. I seriously enjoyed this series and left a lot of stuff out because I plowed through this and did not cover it episode by episode. I also watched it with the American voice actors and actresses as well as subtitles because Netflix always has issues with their sound editing. This is twelve episodes long and only about 22 minutes long each. Good art, good animation, and really good music. I suggest this if you want a break from, like, life.
