The Review: Ready or Not

This movie was crazy. L. and I are continuing watching spooky stuff this month and checked this out. Hulu should be ashamed of how bad their sound is sometimes. So this movie starts off with this guy running through a mansion screaming for help. He stumbles into these two little boys and one of them (Daniel) is like “He right here!” Guy ends up with arrows in him and dragged away. In present day Alex is set to marry Grace. Grace grew up in multiple homes as an foster child and really wants a family. Alex tries to talk her out of it saying his family is crazy and whatnot. He. Should. Have. Been. More. Specific.

Just when they are about to bone down after the wedding old ass auntie Helene is standing in the room staring at them. Alex says it is a tradition to play a game after a wedding at midnight. Grace thinks he is joking. Nope. Dead ass serious. So they head downstairs where the father explains the history of how the family came into wealth and why they do this gaming tradition. Pretty much one of their ancestors played a game on a ship and was given wealth and using this box and playing this game keeps the wealth coming. Grace is all in and ends up pulling a hide-and-seek card. She is all giggly about it but Alex looks around worried. They give her to one hundred to find a place and stay hidden until dawn. She hides in a dumbwaiter. Meanwhile the family is arming themselves with guns, axes, and crossbows! This is not a game!

Alex finds Grace and starts explaining that the family plans to kill her. Grace still thinks its a joke until a maid is killed because Alex's coked out sister thinks its Grace. Alex tells Grace that the last time the hide-and-seek card was played aunt Helene's husband got killed. This is the stuff from the flashback at the start of the movie. The family has the house locked down and cameras turned off so they can play “fair” and follow tradition. Daniel finds her and kinda doesn't give a fuck and drinks all the time. He says he will give her a chance to escape. The coked out sister ends up killing another maid with a crossbow. Grace ends up hiding in the kitchen and splashes hot ass tea on the butlers face. He big mad. Alex gets into the camera room and turns them back on and tries to unlock doors so Grace can escape. His father and Daniel find him and tie him up so he can't interfere anymore. Oh, and the third maid gets crushed in a dumbwaiter while trying to let everyone know where Grace is.

Grace ends up hiding in this barn full of goats. One of the coked up sisters' sons finds her. Grace tries to console her and he starts screaming he finds her and shoots her in the hand. Grace punches his monkey ass and then ends up falling into a hole that is full of old corpses and dead goat parts. She manages to climb up a ladder with one good hand until it lands on a giant nail sticking out. Grace is going through it. She makes her way to the front of the house and squeezes through a bar getting even more sliced up and tries to stop a car that yells at her and doesn't stop. Stevens who she burned with hot tea chases her down and gets her into the car. She chokes him out and calls for help but the bootleg OnStar says the car is reported stolen and shuts off. Steven reappears and knocks her out. As he is triumphantly driving her back to the mansion she wakes up and kicks him until he crashes and the car flips. The family was watching this whole thing on the camera phone. Daniel stumbles onto her and after she says he is a good guy and pleads with him to let her go he knocks her out as his dad emerges from the bushes.

Sacrifice time! Grace is tied down and the family is about to stab her ass. Daniel poisons the family and they start throwing up all over the place (they used this chalice for the ritual and all took sips). Daniel's own raggedy ass wife shoots him in the neck. The wife gets killed too but I forget how. Think Grace shot her. Grace bumps into Alex and Daniel's mom (who actually liked Grace) and they start going at it. Grace gets the upper hand and beats the woman to death with the ritual box. Alex shows up like “Yeah, this woman ain't gonna wanna stay with me” and captures her so they can continue the ritual. Just when Alex is about to stab her she moves, gets shoulder stabbed, and the sun comes up. Its too late to do the ritual. They start to think maybe this is all bullshit. Helene is pissed and is about to chop Grace with an ax when she suddenly just explodes. One by one the family blow up. Alex is the last one and says he loves Grace and that they can still be together. She says she wants a divorce and tosses her ring at Alex. He explodes. She sees a vision of this devil man Le Bail for a moment in flames (Alex saw him as a child). She steps outside as sirens and police show up. They ask what happened and she's like “In-laws.” The end.

I liked the effects and music in this. Each character was easy to understand and I could tell their motivations for continuing this sick game. Alex wasn't so cut and dry until you realize that even though he says he doesn't want to be with or like his family he is the most like them out of everyone. Grace could have gotten an easier game to play like chess or something but got what was considered the worst card. This is a fun Halloween movie. Goes by quickly and left me with no questions which is why I do not need the sequel that my lady told me is coming out.
