The Review: War Machine

War Machine 8/10

This is another movie me and my lady checked out for whatever reason. It turned out to be pretty damned good. This about a guy know only as 81. He and his brother are soldiers. His brother says they should try to be rangers and 81 reluctantly agrees. Moments later explosions rock the convoy and his brother is hit while 81 suffers a wound to his leg. He carries his brother back to a base about ten miles away and collapses looking into his dead brothers eyes. In present day he is trying out with a bunch of others to be a ranger. They say he has failed a few times but here he is still trying.

81 don't wanna be friends with anyone or a leader which baffles the people in charge because he is very good at this rangering stuff. He is pulled into a meeting where they want him to quit voluntarily. They also mention that he has not finished his therapy for PTSD. He like “Fuck you” and continues on. As they show more training people are dropping like flies. There are a few that make it to the end and I started trying to figure out which two or three would make it to the end of the film. My numbers were very off.

So they are given a final test. Find and destroy a downed ship. Find POW. Contact rescue and leave. They get there and find the down ship and detonate it. The smoke clears and this damned thing doesn't even have a scratch on it. This ship starts blowing smoke and hovers into the air. It starts scanning folks with a blue beam and then blasts the shit out of them with a red one! This shit is an alien! Oh, I forgot to mention that earlier whenever there was a TV around there were news reports of a meteor and then a meteor breaking off pieces of itself. Rangers falling down the cliff getting all fucked. One impaled. Another shatters his leg and spends the rest of the movie on a gurney and unconscious. He the lucky one. If you're wondering why they don't fight back, its because they got blanks. This was supposed to be a training exercise.

More and more of them get killed as this damn thing turns into a standing robot. They make it to a vehicle with weapons and are doing okay until the alien blasts their asses. Not 81 and gurney dude number 7 are left. 81 drags 7 to a tree cause he got an idea. He saw the alien venting earlier and realizes he can clog the thing. He does using a gravel pit and a bulldozer. He carries 7 back to base the way he couldn't for his brother. Higher up are like “The world fighting these things. How the fuck you beat one alone?” He explains, is made an official ranger, and hops on a helicopter to go fight. This was a very good and simple movie and plot. I would like a sequel that takes place right after this. The alien was petty as fuck and would not let them have a moments rest. It was consistently on their asses throwing bombs, missiles, and lasers.
