The Review: I Care A Lot

I Care A Lot 1/10

This movie is pure ass and this review will be full of spoilers. You can stop reading now if you want. This is going to be about me being upset at such a trash movie and later finding out that the star was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in it. The whole award season stuff is going to have to be a post on its on its own. This is about a con artist named Marla who uses the legal system to grant her guardianship over people. She will work with doctors and others to say “You can't take care of yourself and I now control your life” and immediately start draining all their assets personally and put them in a care facility that she is also working with to keep them alive and get their money. She is a garbage person and not likable in any way but she is the star so its confusing. As I watched this with L. I kept saying and thinking “There has to be someone to cheer for.” I mean the movie begins with a guy trying to see his mother in a facility and being arrested for doing so and losing in court. He spits in Marla's face which is a murderable offense in my eyes but still. She trash.

While talking to a doctor she is working with Marla and this doctor are like “We can change up this lady's medical information and say she can't take care of herself” even though she is 69 and completely healthy. Marla shows up at Jennifer Peterson's home and says “You not well. I own you now. Here are the cops. Come with me.” She is shocked but goes along with it after seeing the police and has her phone taken away and locked up. Turns out Marla hit the jackpot because miss Peterson has diamonds and all kinda money. Marla's girlfriend Fran starts selling everything worth anything in the house and this dude shows up in a taxi asking for miss Peterson. Fran says she is gone. The dude leaves looking nervous as fuck and by his reaction I knew shit was about to get bad.

Turns out that miss Peterson is the mother of a mafia dude named Roman. He is being very calm but you can tell he is ready to have someone killed over this shit. A lawyer shows up in court to represent miss Peterson but loses the case. He is making the most obvious of death threats but they are loose enough to where you couldn't really get arrested. Fran finds out that miss Peterson is not real as in she is a girl that died a long time ago and miss Peterson took her identity for some reason. Marla tells the people at the facility to up her drugs at the wrong times and limit all her activities. Three mafia dudes get into the facility and a guard is killed. Fran is trying to get them to bounce but Marla is a fucking idiot. Marla talks shit to miss Peterson and almost gets her ass choked out for her actions and ends up in for real ass lock down.

Marla leaves some of the diamonds at a pawn shop and gets darted and pushed into her own trunk. She wakes up tied to a chair in a construction place. Her girlfriend Fran gets her ass kicked. Roman says he is going to kill Marla's mother and she don't care. She is not afraid to die. He punches her in the face. She admits she knows who he is and wants ten million to keep quiet. Roman says to make it look like an accident and she is driven into a lake with booze. Of course she wakes up, kicks the window out, stumbles to a store, buys some clothes, tosses her tooth in some milk, and heads home. She finds Fran unconscious and beaten with the gas turned on. She pulls her two feet from the stove and she is okay. They drive away and the building explodes.

I should talk about the Roman character. I don't need folks thinking I hate women and am leaving out this monster. Roman is a fucking criminal who deals in human trafficking. There is no redeemable quality about him other than he wants to get his mother back. So in this movie we have a guy that ships women to be sexually abused as cargo against a woman that ruins multiple lives for money and has zero issues with it. This movie has no heroes. I just wanted characters to die.

I am gonna skip a lot but Marla ends up capturing Roman and trying to sign on as his conservator since he legally does not exist and is a John Doe. He proposes a business partnership where she can take her evil shit global and she does. She is living the best life and getting rich and in the last minute the dude from the beginning who spit in her face shoots her dead. That is why this does not have a 0 rating. This is not a good movie. No one to cheer for. The best part of this is miss Peterson (who I finally realized is the mom from The Lost Boys) and after a certain point she doesn't seem as relevant as Marla getting revenge she doesn't deserve. I know there are larger social messages in this but from the reviews I have read they watched this like a news report or just want Fran or Marla sexually or they can do no wrong because of the sexuality they're portraying. If I watched this as a social commentary it would just be a bummer. As a film its trash and a waste of some good actresses and actors. Don't waste your time watching this.
