The Review: Jonathan

Jonathan 8/10

Full of spoilers. I just finished watching this movie called Jonathan on Netflix. It came out last year and I've never even heard of it. This is one of those movies that you find on accident and end up really enjoying. I only checked it out because of the star of this. It starts with this guy leaving video messages and then watching them the next morning and going about his routine each day. It turns out that this is actually John and Jonathan, two brothers that share one body. How? Why? They get to that later. Try to find real scientific reasons why and your head will explode. Jonathan works as an architect. His exercises every day, goes to work, eats right, makes sure he is in bed for his brother John to enjoy his evening. Yeah. Jonathan has control from 7am to pm and John has it from 7pm to 7am. The video messages they leave are things like what they did, who they talked to, and if they need groceries or whatnot.

Jonathan starts wondering about what John is up to because he is not eating dinner that was made, picking up after himself, and generally slacking off. In the videos John is chill as fuck. Jonathan is very straight laced and adheres to the rules. Things like no lying and no girlfriends. Jonathan hires and private investigator who thinks he is crazy because he is being paid to follow who he thinks is Jonathan. He sees that John is seeing a girl named Elena which he has never mentioned and against the rules. Jonathan continues to go to work and be responsible and John is becoming more careless and staying up all night making Jonathan tired. One day Jonathan decides to start following Elena who spots his ass and talks to him. He has no idea who the hell she is and she asks if something is wrong. She even says it's the first time she has seen him during the day.

Jonathan talks to Dr. Nariman. She is the one who gave the device that keeps the brothers on schedule. It is later revealed that when John was a baby he would scream and cry and could not stop. The doctors tried everything and it turned out that two personalities were in one body so she made the device that kept shit in order. Everything is fine and good for years but now Jonathan is waking later. He leaves a message telling John that he needs to break up with Elena. John says no and they end up message fighting. Jonathan wakes up drunk on the floor and watches the video John left saying it is over with Elena. Jonathan tries explaining his situation to Elena and she thinks he is crazy but eventually starts to come around. The end up hooking up which is terrible.

Jonathan keeps it secret from John. Dr. Nariman tells Jonathan to tell John which he does not do but she does and John heads to Jonathan's job, wrecks shit, and gets him fired. It also turns out there was once three brothers but the doctor had one erased. Oh, and before Jonathan got fired he woke up with a black eye because the private investigator saw him and asked about Elena not knowing it was John and not Jonathan. An argument ensued and John got clocked. Jonathan ends up moving in with Dr. Nariman to be treated because John is taking antidepressants and miserable. John wants to be erased but Jonathan refuses to let it happen. Jonathan wakes up on a bridge and sees that John left a video message on a bridge saying he is going to jump eventually. He wakes up repeatedly running towards the edge of a building getting closer to the edge. He ends up chaining himself to bed with a combination lock and John does not know what the numbers are.

As I watched this I kept thinking “There is no way this can end well.” I was satisfied with the ending and could not imagine it another way that was better. I loved the look of this weird ass movie. I also like when some sci-fi movies or series have technology that is super advanced but doesn't try to explain it because it either sounds stupid or is so technical that it just folds in on itself. I liked that they focused on Jonathan more even though I read some complaints that they wanted to see more of the John character. I more like the idea of the one trying to hold shit together having to deal with whatever John does like when he wakes up in a room with a woman and some coke on the table.

Ansel Elgort as Jonathan/John
Patricia Clarkson as Dr. Mina Nariman
Suki Waterhouse as Elena
