This was amazing. I have been a fan of Luther since I was a little kid. Me and my lady ended up watching this and I found out so much new information about him such as the fact that he got started with performing so young and wrote songs for a lot of big people. I knew about him singing background with David Bowie but thought it was in just one song. I was super wrong. This is told through interviews with people that worked with him from the start of his career and uses a good balance of that along with interviews with him. I realized I had never actually watched an interview with him and he seemed like such a cool ass dude. And he could just sing! What I mean by that is he didn't warm up, do coke, or giggle and play it off. He could just sing at the drop of a hat with or without music.
This covers the struggles Luther had with being in an industry based on image and him being both darker skinned and overweight. They document his struggles with his up and down weight and how it became a focal point of what people wanted to talk to him about as well as his personal life. By the way, the more I see Oprah pop up in these documentaries the less I like her. She slid with some terrible shit back in the day. Luther is one of those artists I think may get taken for granted because he was so damned good. There are some rappers I think are so good that people just sort of put them in a strange box. They won't get the recognition that they deserve while they are around while people who may look better or have greater marketing skyrocket meanwhile these actual good musicians are just cranking out album after album that gets no recognition. Big Boi never stopped rapping while everyone is begging Andre to put down his flute and start rapping again!
They touch on other aspects of his personal life in regards to his music like how he was singing about love while having issues finding the love he craved. Patti decides to just straight up out him and that pissed me off. She another one that pisses me off the older I get and hear about her. Patti might not be shit. His other friends were like “Its not my place to speak on that” and Luther himself told people to mind their fucking business. Oh, and Luther designed the outfits for his shows. He was on top of everything for his performances. I felt genuinely happy for him when he finally got a Grammy award and seeing him perform with people he looked up to while he was growing up. Its hard to find where to watch this but its worth seeking and finding.
