The Review: Hap And Leonard Season 3

Hap And Leonard Season 3 (10/10)

Full of spoilers. The last episode of season three of Hap And Leonard had a scene so intense I pulled an ass muscle! After watching this I read that it was canceled and if I had any power over a station I would renew the fuck out of this show. Each season is six episodes at about 45 minutes and every single one has been great. This is one of those shows I tell people to watch and have to repeat the title. Maybe it is the channels it airs on originally. Maybe it is bad advertisement. Either way this is a series that way more people should have been watching and talking about. This season was somehow heavier than the previous two in tone (click here for season one and here for season two).

It starts with a tale of a blues singer that sells his soul to the Devil decades ago. I was confused until I remembered that the flashbacks always tie into the show in some way. Leonard is dressed as Santa Claus and setting a neighbor that slangs drugs house on fire. He is not trying to hide or anything. A couple of guys suffer the effects of having a jerry curl back in the day. Leonard goes to jail but he and the police are really friendly about the whole thing. Hap shows up and was arrested as well. A police lieutenant makes a deal with Hap to go check on Florida Grange in this town called Grovetown. She used to mess around with Hap and he is super in love with her. Leonard comes even though the town is known for being mega racist!

They are not in town for even a few minutes before they get their window spat on and almost ran off the road. They head to this diner and everyone stops talking when they see Leonard's Black ass. People want to know why they are there. They end up finding out that Florida was there to represent this kid who was hung from the towns bridge. He is also a distant relative of the guy that was shown in the flashback at the start. It is said that whoever listens to these old songs end up being cursed and after all the weird shit that happens this season I can not doubt it.

This lady named Officer Reynolds became one of the most hated characters in a series for me. This show is really good at villains. I think I also got mad at myself because even though she was violent, evil, and racist I kept thinking about how hot she was. They head to this diner and a cook named Bacon who is surrounded by racists ass people passes them a note saying “She's Dead You're Next.” They don't see it but bump into the guys that tried to run them off the road. They run over their tandem bike and end up getting their racists asses handed to them. She arrests Hap and Leonard and the meet up with a cop that worked in their town who is here now. Oh. I forgot. They are on a bike because their car got fucked up and has to be repaired and they were handed a ticket for where it was parked.

Hap and Leonard end up chased by some KKK members and end up in the woods. They find Florida's car and a tape recorded she used. They hear some of what she was investigating and then some weird metal sounds. Some flash forward scenes show Hap all fucked up and bruised and sitting at home miserable listening to Florida's tape. Leonard is being haunted by his past self in the military and a man that helped raise him to be tough when he was younger. There is this spooky ass girl that pops up in the episodes. Florida talks to her at one point. She never speaks. There is a flashback showing how she was chased by the racist guys and the guy that ended up being hanged saved her but was arrested. She did not indicate in any way that he did nothing so he is pretty much sentenced to death.

Hap and Leonard end up in a huge battle at the diner where they win. They kick these guys asses. Then more show up and Hap and Leonard end up being beaten close to death, especially Leonard. This is when things catch up and Hap is feeling like a failure while Leonard is trying to figure out how to get his toughness back. He survived being a gay Black man in Vietnam but says now he is scared all the time and sounds make him nervous. They decide to head back into the town again for one last battle which leads to one of the most intense, stressful, and saddest endings to a TV series I have seen in years. The shit was bad. So imagine my feelings after seeing that this show was canceled. Great characters, cast, acting, music, scenery, and stories. Every episode is important. Every small thing matters. I know it seems like I spoiled a lot but there is no way to cover this entire season in one post and make it sound as good as it was. Sucks it is done but I am so glad that I watched this.
