The Review: Santa Clarita Diet

Santa Clarita Diet 8/10

I watched the new Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet. Watched. Hell, I plowed through it in about three days really. This show is good. If you liked the first few seasons of Dexter or Dead Like Me or movies like Shaun Of The Dead or Evil Dead this is right up your alley. Its that kind of humor and super gore. I didn't know much about this show but Cam mentioned something about the mom being a cannibal. There will be some spoilers in this review. Seriously. Don't read reviews if you're worried about spoilers. There are ten episodes and each one is about 29 minutes long so it flies on by.

This stars a couple named Joel and Sheila Hammond played by Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore. They are real estate agents that work as a team. One day while showing a home to a couple Sheila vomits. This is the most vomit I have ever seen. Just buckets of the shit. She heads to the bathroom and there is more vomit all over the bathroom. She ends up coughing up what looks like a ball of meat or something. They head to the hospital but it takes too long and they leave. Sheila starts wanting oral all the (women, am I right?) and shows her husband and daughter Abby played by Liv Hewson that she can not bleed and no heartbeat. Sheila tries to eat regular food and ends up getting sick.

A new guy shows up at her job and at their home and openly flirts with Sheila. He ends up flirting with her at a bar and trying to get her to sleep with him which she does and then he threatens to blackmail her for more. She starts sucking on his fingers and then bites them off. Joel comes home and finds her eating his ass alive. To make matters worse their neighbors on each side are cops. One LASD and another for the Santa Monica PD. They don't like each other. The supporting cast and reoccurring characters on this show are really good by the way. I like shows when someone or something seems like a one off and then they return. There is one guy Sheila attacks and when he comes back its pretty damned cool. Sheila and Joel decide that they should start killing bad guys and that goes terribly pretty fast.

This show had some moments that made me actually crack up laughing. There was more than one scene I had to rewind because I was laughing to hard to hear what was said next. Most were provided by Olyphant and Hewson the daughter. Like I said, the show is less than half an hour each episode which works well. An hour each would be way too much for a show like this. The reason I didn't rate this any higher is because while her zombie mystery illness is not solved I can not see this going past two seasons without it being resolved or more people finding out and having to be killed. Still, this show was really funny.
