Theater Whore: Captain America The First Avenger

Let me start this by stating that there will be a ton of spoilers in this review. So if you plan on seeing it don’t read this just yet. Or if you’re one of those people that don’t give a damn then keep on reading.

One of the first things I said after seeing this movie (besides telling my friend that now that Patton Oswald held a door open for him when leaving the theater) was “Now this is how you do a superhero movie!Captain America: The First Avenger automatically made it to the list of my top five favorite superhero/comic book films next to Sin City, Hellboy, Dark Knight Returns, and Blade 2.

Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, The Losers) stars as Steve Rogers, the man who would eventually become Captain America. As the movie starts off Rogers is skinny. I mean, like, super skinny! The way they did it was amazing and you actually forget that Chris Evans is actually in very good shape. The effects didn’t look shaky or creepy like in the X: Men films. Rogers keeps attempting to join the army during World War 2 and gets rejected because he suffers from multiple ailments.

Eventually he meets a scientist Dr. Abraham Erkskine played by Stanley Tucci (Easy A, The Devil Wears Prada, The Pelican Brief) who tells him that he can be a part of an experiment to make him stronger. Rogers does the experiment that is conducted by Iron Man’s father Howard Stark played by Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!, The Escapist, From Hell) does an amazing job. You can totally see where Tony Stark gets his attitude from.

I have to mention Hayley Atwell is so good as Peggy Carter who helps Rogers along the way as he becomes Captain America. She isn’t close to useless like Gwyneth Paltrow is in Iron Man or a damsel in distress like Katie Holmes in Batman Begins. She can handle herself and brings a lot to the film. Hugo Weaving (Lord Of The Rings, V For Vendetta, The Matrix) as The Red Skull is crazy as hell and looks so deadly.

This movie made me like the character of Captain America. I was so not a fan of him. He just seemed like a goodie two shoes that wore a loud colored outfit and threw a shield. But the very things I made fun of him for are what make him such an unlikely hero. Before he even became a Super Soldier Steve Rogers was a good guy. When asked if he wanted to kill Nazis he says, “No. I just don’t like bullies.” He’s not like Green Lantern who gets off on action. Captain America does what he has to do because it needs to be done.
