The Review: Watchmen Episode 5

Episode 5: Little Fear of Lightning

This weeks episode was dedicated to Wade aka Looking Glass and I loved it. It starts off with him as a young man part of a religious group. They are aware that the US and Russia are about to blow one another up so they need to repent before it is too late. Wade walks up to some Knot Tops and tries to convert them. Just when they are about to whip his ass one of the girls leads him away to a house of mirrors. She challenges his faith and then the strength of his belt as she pulls his pants down. I was like “Dude, run!” She gets him butt booty ass naked and then runs off with his cloths. He stands there naked surrounded by mirrors and starts to yell at himself for being a sinner and a fool. Next thing you know a sound starts making the mirrors break and blood come out of Wade's ears. He heads outside and almost everyone is dead. The camera pans out and we get to see the giant squid that killed millions.

I was telling people that this series earned that image. I know when the movie came out I liked the different ending but after watching this series so far I realized that the movie did not set the squid up and if it had happened it would have been ridiculous.

Wade leads a group for people who survived the squid attack. A woman shows up new to the group and afterward calls Wade out. They end up at a bar where they share their stories. As she leaves a head of lettuce falls out of the truck. I knew it was a trap. Wade follows the truck and calls for backup. He heads inside after searching the truck and grabbing a gun. Basketball fall from the ceiling freaking him out. He sees a bunch of members of the Kavalry throwing balls into a portal. He tells them they are under arrest. He shoots at one and it is blanks. They let him know they tricked him into coming here and then Senator Keene is there and reveals a tape that lays all the shit out. He also says he needs Angela out of the way for their plan to create another attack to continue.

Veidt is in an old video explaining how he created and released the squid to stop everyone from using their bombs. And it worked. What he didn't plan for though were the survivors and how it would affect them. The image of Wade realizing that everything that he thought was real and a threat was a lie was painful. His hats have this foil inside to protect from alien attacks. His mask he wears is made of the same stuff. He has a security system for when squids rain down. His ex wife couldn't deal with his crazy shit. Oh, right. He gets the results of the pills Angela gave him from the old man and they turn out to be a pill called Nostalgia and are made from memories. At the station he reveals this to Angela who is immediately arrested because Laurie had Wade's cactus bugged. She downs the pills as she is taken away.

Meanwhile Adrian's crazy ass straps into one of his suits to be launched into space via catapult with a tether. Well the shit works! He lands on a man and starts using the bodies he has launched over the last few years to spell of SAVE ME after spotting a satellite. Just as he is cheering he is yanked back by the Game Warden who is a version of one of the other clones he has made. This was a really good episode. It took the mystery and strangeness out of Looking Glass but didn't make his character seem any weaker. I just hope he survives that van full of Kalvary members who showed up at his place at the end of the episode.
