I thoroughly enjoyed this weird ass movie whose title I will never remember. This was suggested when my Roku went into screen saver mode and I thought “I vaguely know about this” and recall seeing a gif from this online. You know the one.
So this movie is about Nic Cage playing himself. He keeps on not getting roles that he is trying for and just wants to work. A younger version of himself that only he can see pops up every once in a while to remind him of who he is. He has an ex-wife named Olivia who is kinda over the way he treats them since he is obsessed with the art of acting. His daughter wants nothing to do with him pretty much. He loses a role that he assumed he was a shoe-in for and gets drunk and shows up at his daughters birthday party and sings a song for her. No one is impressed. His agent lets him know of a gig just showing up at a party for a million bucks. He heads to another country to meet Javi who is a billionaire to be his guest of honor. Oh, I forgot to mention that this movie starts off with a kidnapping of a young girl watching one of his films.
Nic does not care about Javi or his party because he thinks that his career is over and he is showing up for parties like a clown. Javi is a massive fan and wants to work on a movie with him and is bummed out when Nic says that he is done acting. Nic begins to warm up to Javi because this man is so damned likeable. He even has an entire room full of Nic Cage memorabilia. They ended up really bonding over the movie Paddington 2 (which I now want to see). Nic is confronted by two FBI agents. Okay, this is one of the reasons I didn't wanna see this movie. I am not a fan of the lady that plays one of the agents. She is in this in small doses so I was able to cope. They say that Javi had the girl at the start kidnapped and they need evidence against him and wants Nic to use this love of him to get Javi to admit to it.
At the party Nic places a camera in there (after some trouble) and says he will do a movie with Javi. They go driving, dive off a cliff, do drugs, and decide that the movie should be about them and their friendship. Nic tries to be slick and says kidnapping should be in the story to see what Javi says. Javi think Nic is distracted by problems at home and secretly brought his ex-wife and daughter to the island so that they could work things out. The movie changes tone after this because other than the FBI stuff I got wrapped up in these two weirdos being new friends and would have been fine watching them have adventures together. Like, a show with these guys would be fun to watch. Pretty sure there were only three commercial breaks while I watched this and one was just three seconds long. This was really fun and you should check it out.
