The Review: Doom Patrol Season 2 Episodes 2/3

Doom Patrol S2E2 “Tyme Patrol”

Full of spoilers. This show continues to be insane in the best ways possible. If you aren't watching Doom Patrol because of any preconceived notions you need to cut that shit out. This episode shows what Dorothy has been up to since we know she is Niles' daughter but not why he hasn't been taking care of her. We go back in time where she is being used as a circus sideshow freak along with her moose/wolf/bear creature and Niles is watching in the crowd. Last episode we just saw the aftermath of the carnage. This time we see it from Niles' perspective and the shit was honked up! Besides that furry monster mauling folks Candlemaker is destroying others. He spots Niles and gets all up in his business but doesn't kill him.

Cliff doesn't give a fuck about Niles and his stories. He is in full hate mode after realizing that they were all experiments in immortality so that Niles could find a way to live forever or as he puts it live one day longer than Dorothy. Niles sold his immortality last episode and is slowly aging which freaks Rita out. Niles explains that a guy named Dr. Tyme could help them but says it is too dangerous and doesn't want them to do it. Since he doesn't want them to Cliff thinks they should. Rita, Cliff, and Jane have to use a spell by saying where they were on a certain day to go through time. Cliff lies so it doesn't work until he says the truth and they get to meet Dr. Tyme.

In a side story Larry goes to see his son who killed himself. He has another surviving son who realizes who he is and doesn't freak out which I appreciated. Larry looks through his sons belongings and breaks down since his son believed his dad was still alive and that there was crazy shit in the world and no one believed him. He ends up walking down a road when suddenly he is surrounded by a horde of butterflies. Vic also has a story line going. He left the team and is in a support group and seems to like this woman named Roni. Its not interesting to me. I won't get into it too much.

Dr. Tyme is fucking crazy. He says that this one particular day in the early 1980's was the best of human history and has people from multiple time periods just roller skating to Donna Summers perpetually. Cliff gets tired of it and breaks the turntable. Rita uses her powers thinking she is ripping Dr. Tyme's mask off but he falls (he is on skates) and smashes his head dying. She winds the clock back and he sends all of them away. I hope he comes back in some way because I loved how strange he was.

Doom Patrol S2E3 “Pain Patrol”

I called a half ape girl a bitch. Yeah. I did. This starts with a flashback in 1888 showing Niles as a little boy seeing this women get tossed out of smoke and bleeding in the alley after a cop warns him about being out at night with the Ripper being around. So of course the Ripper appears and is surprised that Niles is not afraid. He is Red Jack and he kills the woman and butterflies come shooting out of her. Present day Niles is eating some French toast that Dorothy made for him. Rita has been teaching her how to cook which is sweet as fuck. Cliff barges in all pissed and Niles is like “You had problems before I turned you into a robot. You need to work on that.” Cliff decides to go on a road trip and Jane wants to join him. I love the two of them together.

While heading to talk to Cliff's daughter which is a horrible idea Jane falls asleep. The Underground is pissed off at her not just for using drugs which is fucking them all up but for caring about Dorothy. They think she needs to be focused on just being miserable while they get to chill in the Underground and show up, use an ability, and then go back down for Jane to clean up any mess they made. They end up catching her slipping later in the episode and lock her in a cage. Who knows what the fuck personality is gonna be in charge now?

Cliff confronts his daughter. He knocks on the door looking like a big ass robot, says he is her father she thought was dead, and gets happy to see that she is pregnant and he will be a grandfather. Jane (before she got fucked over by the Underground) points out that what Niles did was not his fault but what he is doing to his daughter now is very much his fault.

Vic meets up with Roni and they have sex. She has scars. He a robot. He can still feel stuff. Like sex. I still don't care. Like, I seriously have zero interest in this story and I hope it goes somewhere interesting soon because after two episodes it is pretty lame.

Some butterflies show up at the house with an invitation for Niles. In the envelope is one of Larry's bandages which is super fucked up. Red Jack has Larry hanging with his bandages slowly unraveling and giving people below him radiation poisoning. They show flashbacks of when he first arrived to the house and Rita watched him change out of his outfit and into the bandages Niles made to hold in the radiation and keep him from wearing pretty much a hazmat suit with a vacuum cleaner attached. He and Rita bond and its cool. I liked it but for a second was afraid they were gonna do some romantic subplot. They didn't. Great job.

Niles and Rita head to find Larry and he tells her if she gets lost to follow the butterflies. Red Jack offers Niles a gig to which he says no and ends up stabbing him to death and a bunch of butterflies explode out of him. Rita saves Larry by exposing herself to the radiation and melting but still yanking him from the chains. They find cases full of butterflies and break them open freeing them. Turns out each one was a victim. Red Jack's crazy ass fed off their agony. Oh, and while playing hide and seek Dorothy accidentally breaks Danny!!! This episode was nuts. Loving this second season except for the Vic/Cyborg stuff.
