The Review: Shot Caller

Shot Caller 8/10

There will be some spoilers, ya babies. Jasmine has been telling me to watch this movie Shot Caller for a while and tonight I finally did and I am so glad. This was a cool ass movie and reinforced my belief that I would not make it far in prison before getting killed for being stupid or killing myself because I love shitting in private too much. This stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Game Of Thrones as Jacob Harlon aka Money. He is a normal ass guy with a normal ass job and normal ass wife and kid. But you don't see that at first. We see him being released from prison looking all kinds of rough and meeting up with Jon Bernthal aka Frank (not Castle) and Emory Cohen from that great movie Brooklyn. Money comes out with a reputation, ends up at a party where a girl gets shot, and goes on the run. This is his first damned night out!

Going back in time we see him with his wife and another couple riding in their car making plans for a show. They had drank earlier and he has his eyes all off the road while they are talking like people do all the time and he runs a light and they get t-boned. His friend ends up dying in the accident and he is sent to prison for a few years. He gets there and the first day on the yard is challenged by a Black dude. He fights back and the White guys with racist shit tattooed all over their bodies, including Frank, let him know what he has to do to roll with them. He struggles at first but adapts to the fucked up lifestyle.

In the outside world in the present day Money tries to have contact with his wife who wants none of his dirty ass money but wants him to meet his son. He does not want to because it is dangerous so of course his wife brings his son and he has to tell his son he does not want to see him again. Meanwhile he is also skeptical of Frank and his motives which he should be.

This movie was really good and not as cheesy as I thought it would be at the start based on how Money looked. They really did a good job of making him look so different at various points of his free life and prison life that the jumping back and forth through time never got confusing. This was also shot well but it would have been cool if they used different types of film for different parts of the movie. Like if it was film and gritty when he was in jail and clearer when out. Just a thought. Check this movie out. Its on demand on Amazon.
