The Review: The Little Things

The Little Things 8/10

Lots of spoilers likely. A few days ago I watched the movie The Little Things on HBO Max. I was so excited to see this because of the cast and really liked it because it was such a dark ass movie. It felt like something from the 90's or early 2000's which it turns out makes sense as that was when it was written. One night this girl is driving and happy so I knew something bad was gonna happen. This car starts speeding towards her and then stopping. She gets spooked and runs for help at a gas station but no one is there. She ends up running away until she makes her way to the road and a trucker stops and helps her. Later deputy sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon (definitely written in the 90's) is sent from Kern County to Los Angeles to get some evidence from a recent murder. When he shows up everyone is either dodging him like he's on fire or trying to talk to him when no one is looking. I found out later why and it makes a shit ton of sense. This dude is toxic.

A new lead detective named Jimmy Baxter is running this case on a series of murders which sound familiar to Deke. It was a case he was never able to solve. We find out that his obsession with the case cost him his marriage and family. He also put a bullet in a victims chest but that information comes later. I mean, I likely would have done the same thing seeing someone come darting out of the darkness that way. It was covered up and he was never able to recover after that shit personally or professionally. He sees that Baxter is starting to go down the same path he is still on and offers to help and by help I mean feed his own obsession with tying these new crimes to his old one. He lasers in on this guy Albert Sparma after more murders take place. Dude looks guilty as hell but it turns out he confessed to crimes he never did in the past because he has a thing about serial killers.

This movie starts going in some crazy directions which I really liked. I actually dug a lot about this movie. I know a lot of folks didn't dig it because these days everyone wants a nice, clean happy ending. This movie does not give you that. It gives you one of those fucked up “I don't know how I feel” endings and I liked that. I have been watching a lot of documentaries lately and it turns out that crime usually isn't solved easily like on TV shows. This movie is about a damaged man essentially become the sin eater for someone else which is very heroic of him. Check this out. Its good. Make your own decision. You can watch it at home.
