The Review: Black Orpheus

Black Orpheus 9/10

This movie was awesome. I had heard of Black Orpheus but didn't know nothing about it other than the original tale it spun from which took me way to long to figure out in this film. L. suggested this one and we checked it out last week. Its about this woman named Eurydice who arrives to Rio de Janeiro during Carnival...I think. The whole city is a big ass party that will culminate with an even larger one. She is trying to get to her cousins place because she is on the run and ends up getting snatched onto a train. Like, literally snatched onto it. She is found at the last stop by this dude named Orfeu who is the train driver. He immediately takes a liking to her but he is newly engaged and every woman in the town wants a slice of him. He doesn't seem to want to get married to Mira who wants all of the attention from everyone.

Orfeu gets home after getting his guitar from the pawn shop and sees that Eurydice is staying next door from him. And by next door I mean through the sorta wall and curtain that separates them. Eurydice tells her cousin that she is running from a man that is trying to kill her. At one point the dude sows up and he is dressed as actual Death. Orfeu chases him off with a knife and Death is like “See ya later!” Orfeu takes care of Eurydice and tries to sleep but there are goats and chickens and cats and dogs everywhere. She lets him into her bed and these little kids that are throughout this movie I haven't mentioned bring his guitar so he can make the sun rise.

Serafina, Eurydice's cousin, has her man visiting and wants to play weird ass sex games with her and asks Eurydice to take her place in the Carnival. Only the kid and Orfeu knows she is in disguise and when he finds out he is dancing his ass off with her as Mira keeps trying to get his attention. This whole movie Orfeu has been dodging her. I kinda felt bad for her but not really because she was way too attention hungry. She just wanted Orfeu because every woman did. Death shows up and he is searching for her. Serafina shows up with her dude and are front row when Mira sees them and realizes something is up. She finds Eurydice and straight up tries to kill her. Death spots Eurydice and begins his hunt.

This movie gets crazy as hell after this point and I don't wanna ruin it in case someone knows nothing about this story. But it goes right off the rails (and someone gets on the rails...) but in a cool ass way. I was very much into this movie. Its all subtitled so you uncultured folks will be turned off by that but its definitely worth checking out. I believe I watched this on HBO Max which has a lot of classic movies hidden inside. Or was it Amazon? Either way find it and watch it. This movie was made in 1959 but did not feel even kind of old.
