The Review: Doom Patrol Season 2

Doom Patrol Season Two 6/10

Full of spoilers. I finished the second season of Doom Patrol. I normally cover each episode but since I watched so many in clumps I am gonna just talk about the characters and how I felt about them by the end of the season. I broke them down into categories of good, okay, and ugly. This season was a roller coaster. I rated this one lower than the previous season because there was a lot of time wasted on some uninteresting characters or some characters, by the time the season ended, were right back where they started and any character growth they experience meant nothing. Some story aspects were straight up just forgotten about. CK told me that there is a third season coming and that shit better be incredible every single episode to make up for this one. I almost don't care if it continues or not. It made the same mistake that Umbrella Academy did in its second season where I can only watch people fuck up with no progress for so long.

The Good

Cliff. This bastard was good. Even though he fucked up a lot he would later fix whatever new problems he created. Well, he would at least try. From meeting his daughter after 30 years and fucking that up to finally reconciling with her, finding out she is pregnant and he is gonna be a grandfather, and even being invited to her wedding...only to go help fight a problem that he nor the team were equipped to deal with. Out of the whole team he is the most fucked in terms of not living a normal life. He spent decades being miserable as a human and more as a robot. He doesn't eat, drink, and can't feel anything. His body freezes up. I was looking forward to how his relationship with his daughter would go but by the end of this season he got wrapped up in some bullshit so that was ruined. I like his character, his voice, the way he looks, and how his reaction to everything crazy that happens is exactly how I'd react. Just a lot of confused cursing. I won't mention how he gets blown into space and its never brought up again after he lands back on Earth.

Jane. One of the best characters on this show. Imagine having over 60 personalities in your body and every one of them has a super power and almost none of them think you're doing your job right. So what do they do? They jump in, solve the issue, then act like you could have done it but didn't because you are a fuck up. Jane ends up getting high and it makes the Underground fall apart. Eventually she relinquishes control to the others and they can't deal with it. Later she has another take over control of her body and it is a clusterfuck. No matter what she did she couldn't make anyone happy. She seemed to be making progress as the show went on only to have her dumped back at zero and being fucked over by the Underground even though she was right. By the time Miranda shows up and makes everything worst I couldn't understand what was going on with this character anymore other than continuing to make her suffer.

Weird Shit. This show has been consistent with their use of weird shit. From Danny The Street that stayed my favorite character whether it was a street, a brick, or a tire. How could you hate a gender queer street that offers sanctuary to anyone that needs it? Flex Mentallo who can flex and do pretty much anything from rescue cats to making cupcakes appear out of thin air. Or give an entire city an orgasm. The villains were great though I hated that they usually didn't last more than one episode whereas last season Mr. Nobody was there the whole time. Candlemaker was one of the most creative looking villains on a show full of them. This show makes me run to the internet after watching to look up these characters and see if they are real or not and in every case they are and have been around for decades.

The Okay

Rita. Oh, I want to like her more than I do but every time they have her character changing they snatch her ass back to the start. She has incredible powers when she can control them and it was nice to see her not melt whenever she got stressed. She battled issues from her youth and treatment at the hands of her mother and how she turned out to be a monster. Dealing with knowing that she and the rest of her team were just lab rats for Niles. Teaching Dorothy how to cook. Wanting to fight crime on her own. She did a lot. Then they just pull her right on back! Everything she learned meant nothing by the time the season ended. Her acting is great though and I love her character. I just wish they would allow her to grow.

Larry. Oh, Larry. This is another character that suffers from growing and then having it all changed. I liked watching him comes to terms with the fact that he was a shitty father and terrible husband to his wife and a bad boyfriend to the guy he was cheating with. Watching him and the Negative Spirit begin to understand and work together. And then they snatch it all away! Come the fuck on! Larry gets set up by his own kid. Finds out he left his family in shambles. Discovers that this lady who shows up with a dead grab ass playing space crew has a Negative Spirit herself and learned to use it in five years and hasn't age while his dumb ass has to wrap himself in ribbons or else he'll give everyone radiation poisoning. If anyone on this show needed a goddamn break it was him.

The Bad

Niles/The Chief. Fuck this guy. Worst father ever! Every guy on this show is a shitty father but this one is the worst. We find out that he kept his daughter locked under Danny for decades where she couldn't participate in the fun and get to actually be around people. We find out that he is the one that gave all the team their powers because he wanted to live forever or long enough to make sure his daughter was dead. He uses Jane to play with his daughter in her Baby Doll form which leads to her dying. He blasts Cliff into space for no reason. He wants his daughter to stay a child forever even though she is over 100 years old. He used everyone around him and not only ruined multiple lives he continued to put them in danger to save his daughter...that he needed to kill. By the time we get to the point where it is obvious that his daughter was a monster and would destroy the world he manages to fuck that up too and the entire team gets taken out. I hated him this entire season and the fact that he appears to be the only one left alive is bullshit.

Cyborg & Roni. UGH! Cyborg went through so much last season that when he left the mansion I was fine with it even though I really liked him. He has a lot of shit to work through. I get it. Thinks he killed his mom. His body gets more robot parts when he is injured. He damn near beat his father to death. But then they went and had him go to a PTSD group and meet Roni and they hooked up and it was so fucking wack. Every time they came on screen we would sigh heavy because their story is boring. It has nothing to do with the rest of the team. Even when they are in this crazy place that feeds off their stupidity the fact that they are together is used as an example of how dumb they are. They don't make one another better in any way. What is her secret past? Don't care. I legitimately do not care about her character in any way. I can't believe they did this entire fucking season and Cyborg was lame.

Dorothy. This fucking kid. I felt so bad for her at the start of the season. Cliff and Jane wondering what Niles fucked to create her. Finding out that she couldn't have fun on Danny. Her imaginary friends are terrifying as fuck. A glowing faced woman. A giant tarantula. A wolf/moose. A giant candle man that slaughters people when she makes a wish. By the time she even damn near killed Jane I was over her story arc. Get rid of her! Niles was ruining so many people's lives to save this girl that he knew was dangerous. I get it. She can't help it that she is a weapon. But fuck that. When she launched herself to the moon I was happy. Niles could've left her there. He didn't and instead brought her back and shot Cliff into space. She didn't ask where Cliff was. She hides everything from everyone which would be fine if the shit she was hiding wasn't so damn deadly. The first season was spent trying to save this girl and the second was watching her and her father make the team worst. Okay. Cool. Do better next time.
