The Review: Encanto

Encanto 10/10

You lucky ass kids. I watched Encanto with L. streaming and absolutely loved this damn movie. It made me feel feelings! I seriously have no complaints about this and what makes it even more surprising for me is that I really don't dig animated movies anymore that are computer based. Its the bitter ass pencil and paper guy that draws in me. This is about a girl named Mirabel that belongs to this family of Madrigal's that all have special abilities that began after her grandmother and grandfather was trying to get to freedom and a better life with their triplets. The grandfather was killed and a magical candle appears and builds a magical home and land for everyone. Its really cool. Each of the Madrigal's are given a special ability as a child when a door with their image on it appears. One sister can grow flowers and is perfect, another is super strong, one can hear everything, Mirabel's mom can cure anything with her food. And then there's Bruno...but we don't talk about him.

You will notice I didn't mention Mirabel. That is because when it was her time to get a gift the door vanished so she doesn't have any special power. After one of her nephews gets the ability to communicate with animals the house starts to crack and the family starts to lose their powers at random. The grandmother places the blame on Mirabel so she tries to figure out what is going on. She discovers where Bruno lives and tracks his room down and finds one of his prophecies that shows her in front of the home falling apart. The family sing the world's most catchy song and she eventually finds Bruno who has been living in the walls and watching the family. Its sad as hell. He shows her the prophecy again but watches it all the way through and it looks like if she becomes friends with her perfect sister everything will be fine. This turns out not to be true and the house falls apart, everyone loses their powers, and Mirabel is blamed for it and runs away. She makes up with her grandmother and the house comes back and everything is awesome.

This was a really entertaining movie. I knew it existed but didn't have any desire to watch it. Turns out this would have for sure been on my Best Movies Of The Year list. The music in this was so damned good. The animation was pleasant. L. and I appreciated the different hair textures shown. If you are on the fence about this movie just check it out. Its not just for kids. Adults like my old ass thoroughly enjoyed this movie and will likely watch it a few more times this year.
