The Review: The Best Man

The Best Man 7/10

In the continuing saga of L. having me watch movies which has been dubbed Black Movies 101 I watched The Best Man last week. I had heard of this movie but didn't know nothing about it. There is a theme of seeing dudes who aren't shit and them being surrounded by friends that are assholes or seem like they wouldn't be friends with the way they talk to one another. This writer named Harper has a novel that is coming out soon. His girlfriend Robyn is super supportive of him and his goals...which means he is gonna dog her ass out. He is heading to New York City to be the best man for his friend Lance's wedding to Mia. He is picked up from the airport by his friend Murch who lets slip that Jordan (I'll get to her in a moment) got his book early and it has been letting folks read it. The novel is based on their days in college with the names changed but its obvious to everyone involved whose who. Harper is an idiot.

Jordan and Harper allegedly had a thing back in college. They didn't really. They almost did but then the CD skipped. Try explaining that to someone in the 20's. They also meet up with Quentin who is a dog but accepting of his dog lifestyle. I got no problem with him. He honest. We see that Lance met Mia after she was working in college at the newspaper with Harper. One night Quentin asks about Mia and her virginity and how Lance is the only man she has been with. There are some strange looks and I was like “Did Harper fuck her?!” Turns out he did and its in the book but Lance ain't got to that part yet. This fucking guy. So now he is trying to find a way to get the book that is going to be released worldwide away from his friend. Yeah.

Jordan lets Harper know that she wants to have sex with him. Fuck the fact they ain't seen each other in years. Fuck that he has been in a relationship for two years with Robyn who is coming to the wedding. She just wanna fuck. By the way, I haven't really mentioned it but Murch's lady Shelby is the worse. He knows it but can't leave her. So Lance has a bachelor party where he discovers that Harper slept with his soon to be wife and beats the shit out of him and calls the wedding off. Murch also falls in love with a stripper named Candy and I can't blame him. She looks nice. Harper shows up at Jordan's place beat to shit and she is mad cause she horny. He tries to blame her for letting the book get out early. Yeah. She's the cause for all your bullshit. The next day Harper picks up Robyn at the airport and acts like a little bitch. He tells her what happened to him and he begs for her not to leave him. He don't deserve this woman.

Before the wedding starts Murch invites Candy and leaves Shelby. Harper convinces Lance to go through with the wedding through the power of prayer. During the vows Lance has flashes in his head of Harper and Mia fucking. I thought he was gonna run from the altar. He doesn't though. Robyn meets Jordan and doesn't attack her. Harper dances with Jordan and Robyn sees and is gonna leave his punk ass but he proposes to her, like, what the fuck? And she says yes! Afterward everyone dances and Quentin and Shelby wake up in bed butt ass naked and I laughed my ass off. This was a good movie but I hated that Harper got a happy ending he didn't deserve. I'll be watching the sequel around Christmas I've been told (warned).
