Theater Whore: John Wick

John Wick 7/10

This was surprisingly cool. Besides that catching me off guard was how huge this cast was. It was like everyone from your favorite cable shows were hired. I'm gonna just list everyone here to show you. Keanu Reeves, Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Willem Dafoe, Dean Winters, Adrianne Palicki (ugh), Bridget Moynahan, John Leguizamo, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, David Patrick Kelly, Clarke Peters, and wrestler Kevin Nash. That is a fuck ton of people! Also, if you want to solidify someone as a bad guy, just have them murder a puppy.

This movie has a very basic premise of revenge and I liked that. Reeves stars as John Wick who is a hitman that is out of the game. His wife dies of cancer and while at home being sad he gets a gift from her of a small hound dog. The dog is named Daisy and he is living his normal old life with her until one day at the gas station he comes across the skeevy looking guy that asks John how much he wants for his car and insults his dog.

John heads back home and wakes up after hearing Daisy barking. He walks into the living room and is hit with a baseball bat and beaten. Then the guy, Iosef played by Allen, kills the dog. They steal the car and leave. They take it to a guy played by Leguizamo who recognizes the car is like “Get that the fuck out of here!” One of my favorite parts is when Viggo asks why his son was struck.

Viggo Tarasov: Why did you strike my son?

Aureilo: He stole John Wick's car and killed his dog.

Viggo Tarasov: Oh.

The guys father is named Viggo Tarasov and played by Nyqvist. He beats the shit out of his son and tells him the story of John Wick and how good of a killer he was. Iosef says he will just kill Wick and his father is like “You have no idea what you're dealing with” and brings in all his best men to protect his son. He even calls Wick to try and straighten everything out.

Throughout the movie Dafoe shows up to protect Wick from other killers when he was hired to take Wick out. The rest of the movie is a fun video game of violence. Honestly, the only parts that bothered me were when Palicki showed up. That woman just can not act. Even when she is being strangled she talks perfectly clear. I was like “Act! Pretend you're in danger! Make your face do...something!” This movie has a ton of violent deaths and brutality. It is a fun action movie but goes about 15 minutes longer than it needed.
