The Review: The Art Of Self Defense

The Art Of Self Defense 3/10

Full of spoilers. I watched the movie The Art Of Self Defense on Hulu last night and it was very meh. It was shot well. Had good acting. The look and everything was fine. The problem I had with it was that it felt uneven. It reminded of the movie form Netflix called War Machine where if it had chose a tone it could've have been really good. But this movie would go between an oddly violent Napoleon Dynamite and a goofy Fight Club. If it picked one I would have dug the hell out of this. I read some people say it is like John Wick and that is silly. Just because a dog is killed does not make it John Wick. You might as well compare it to The Thing or Signs. Dogs being killed in movies is the best way to make someone irredeemable.

This is about a guy that lives alone with his small dog that gets attacked one night while getting dog food. After recovering he tries to buy a gun and ends up in a karate class. The teacher is intense as hell and helps him get confidence. He starts acting tough at work and learns to defend himself. He even punches his boss in the throat. He gets in deeper with the class and is invited to night class where they are more violent and weirder. The only girl in the class gets treated like shit. It turns out that the karate class are the ones that attacked him to get him to join the class and pay. One of the students kills his dog and gets him a new more “manly” dog. Once he puts everything together he challenges his sensei to a fight and shoots him in the head and takes over the class claiming he killed him with his finger. He then promotes the girl to a black belt and has his new dog kill the guy. The end. This looked way better from the trailer.
