The Review: Good Boy

Good Boy 7/10

So last week L and I watched three movies. I watched one that she had already seen before. Out of all of them this was my favorite one. This is about a dog named Indy. All I knew about this movie was that it was a ghost story told through the perspective of a dog. I had already seen a movie that I really liked that was told through the perspective of a ghost so I was interested on how they were going to do this one. So there's this dude named Todd and we don't even see his face until the end of the movie that has a lung disease. For the longest time I thought he was a drug addict or something. Turns out that's not the case. The movie starts off with him just sitting up on his couch bleeding and this poor dog just staring at him until Todd's sister shows up and he goes to a hospital.

This is gonna be full of all the what people these days call “victim blaming” so if that bugs you please just go read something else. When I start any documentary about cults I ask myself two questions: Are there any Black people there and why are they? I know that folks can join a cult cause they are lonely and whatnot. Hey. I have been alone but wouldn't consider myself as ever being truly lonely. I think even in my most sad state I would never follow this guy. This dude is a true piece of shit and if you have ever known a loudmouth Black dude you would hear him and immediately go “Oh, this dude is fucknuts. I'm crossing the street.” Like, a couple months ago on the bus this dude was wilding out. He said his name so I looked him up and I'll be damned if there wasn't a video of him screaming the same shit to a camera crew.

The Review: Paradise Season 2

Paradise Season 2 (2/10)

Okay. This is gonna have all the spoilers. The first season of this was incredible. I was telling everyone to watch this because it was such an amazing series and L and I got hype when we saw a prop during a studio tour knowing a second season was coming. Well, they could have kept it because this was booty. I have concerns, complaints, and conundrums. I have all the C's! How could a show go from being one of the best pure seasons of television to whatever the fuck it became. The more I sit on this the worst it gets (ha!) so let me just get this out of my system before I piss myself off more. I am gonna do this episode by episode otherwise it will make even less sense than it did.

The Review: The Beauty

The Beauty 2/10

Me and L started watching this series. She is (maybe was) a fan of American Horror Story while I watched a few seasons of it. I watched the later ones with her and while there would be good premises they managed to never stick the landing. Making more questions than answers. Not fulfilling story lines in a way that satisfied. That is the definition of The Beauty. For whatever reasons she believed this was a limited series while I assumed there would be a single season because the story is not enough to go past a season of television. We were both wrong and now threatened with another season that I for sure will not be watching. If I had written this episode by episode like I do some series you would have been able to witness my disappointment in this series week by week. But I didn't so you are gonna get a half-assed explanation for this show. I will attempt to keep this somewhat linear though the show doesn't. This model is on the runway when she veers off and starts kicking folks asses and downing water. She steals a motorcycle and crashes the shit but isn't hurt. She starts killing people in a restaurant and then she explodes. Pretty exciting start.

The Review: Only Murders In The Building Season 5

Only Murders In The Building Season 5 (10/10)

Well, I was wrong. I was talking trash after finishing last season which I loved and saying that this was the final season and that I hoped that it wouldn't continue because there was no way that it could stay interesting with such a premise as murders happening just in the building. This season fucking ruled and by the end of it me and L. were excited that there would be one more. I have no idea how the writers of this show have managed to make now fifty episodes of a series continue to be interesting, funny, and surprisingly touching at various points.

The Review: Presence

Full of spoilers. L called and said she saw the first ten minutes of this on Hulu and thought I'd be interested. I was. This movie starts off with just a camera walking all around this house. Turns out that it is a ghost. The family arrives, Chris, Rebekah, and their teen children Tyler and Chloe. Whoever wrote this definitely hangs around or knows teens because they had their dialogue down. When they arrive Chloe seems to look right at the ghost who retreats to a closet. Chloe just walks around looking at the place and unknowingly being watched. They end up getting the house and while the workers are there one of them refuses to enter one of the rooms.

Documentality: Hey Beautiful

Hey Beautiful 7/10

This week L and I watched this series on Hulu. Its in three parts and a pretty easy watch being less than an hour each. This follows three women in particular at the start that all fall for the same guy using different names. There is Annette (the thirsty one). Roxy (the old, married one). And Gaby (the German who don't learn lessons). They are totally being scammed and giving this guy between one thousand bucks to over a million. No, they have never met him. When we watch scam things online me and my lady always wonder where these people get all this money to throw away from. Like Annette who is a waitress gives like 40,000 dollars to this guy. Roxy sneaks and has this fake fling with the guy while being married for over 50 years and is bored with her husband. And Gaby who we still aren't sure if she is still married goes as far as selling her childhood home to give money to this dude.

The Review: Paradise

Paradise 10/10

No spoilers!!! I loved this show. For days I have been trying to figure out how to watch this. I had one of my friends suggest it to me and dragged my ass. Then I watched the first two episodes and my ass was hooked! I got my lady into it and we watched the last few episodes together and would spend a bunch of time talking about it and speculating afterward. I even got to talk about it with my cousin JP who also watched. I am putting off getting started because I do not want to spoil this but I can't really write a review without doing so but I am gonna try.

The Review: Only Murders In The Building Season 4

Only Murders In The Building Season 4 (9/10)

I'm not sure why but I have not written reviews for the second and third season of this show that I absolutely adore. That is super weird. I even checked Google to see if there was some mistake. Either way I loved both of those seasons and this one as well. The show manages to have the team solve a murder and have another happen at the very end of the season. This time they investigate the murder of Sazz. I swore that this season I would figure out who the murderer was before it was revealed and though it took all these years I managed to do it and felt so proud of myself. I am not gonna sit here and recap the entire show because I would look foolish trying. Just know that this is a consistently good show and this past season had a lot of heartwarming moments and great acting. It is getting a little long in the tooth and I am glad that the next season will be its last before it wears out its welcome.

The Review: Mr. Crocket

Mr Crocket 6/10

L and I watched this movie that we meant to watch a week ago called Mr. Crocket. I have a lot of random stuff to say about this and a lot of folks may not agree with me or the score I gave it since a lot of people are calling this terrifying and amazing. Its fine. A 6/10 means it is just fine. Do I want more? Not really. This starts off in 1993 with this mother named Rhonda and her son Darren who is watching Mr. Crocket on VHS. The show seems insane as hell. I can't really say that considering the stuff I watched growing up. The show Darren is watching will just stop and show Crocket starring at the scream saying nothing or one of his nutty characters. He also seems to be aware of what is happening in the home. Darren's stepfather wants him to finish eating his food and instead of stepping in Rhonda leaves the room to question her choices in men while Darren is being forced to eat his food.

The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat 8/10

Spoilers!!! This was a really good movie. L brought this up after Hulu sent an email with their new and upcoming things. Now, I take a lot of titles literal so when I first even heard about this I thought it could have been based off of a true story of when the singing group The Supremes went to some random diner back in the day and performed for people that were there. This was not about that at all. This is about three women and their lives from teens to adults and all the drama and joy that they go through. And there is so much drama!

The Review: T.I.M

T.I.M 2/10

Taking a break out of writing another review to knock this one out. My lady told me about this movie called T.I.M and said that I was gonna like it or shit on it. Well, I got my cheeks spread and not in joy. This movie is pretending to be a lot of other better films. If this had come out in the early 2000's or maybe late 90s it would have been more novel. But watching this in 2024 I knew what was gonna happen, who was gonna die, and how it would end within the first ten minutes. By the way, this movie moved by at a snails pace. This engineer named Abi gets a high position at the robotic company she works at. She gets a prototype for for a robot servant named Tim that she has to take. Excuse me? Abi and her husband Paul move into this new home for a fresh start because Paul is a ho. Since she can't trust him around other women I guess moving to a place where there is no one else works. Oh, and he doesn't have a job as far as I could tell.

The Review: Poor Things

I gave this a 1 instead of a 0 because L. and I finished it. We had half an hour left before going to sleep and finished it the next morning. This movie was ass. There is literally nothing I liked about it. It felt like it was trying to imitate better films and directors and failing at every aspect. I should probably talk about what happened in this four hour feeling ass thing. This lady jumps off of a bridge and lands in some water. A guy fishes her out and a doctor pays him for the corpse. Next thing you know the doctor who looks like something from a horror movie has this woman who seems to have the personality of a toddler. His named is Godwin Baxter aka God. The woman is named Bella. She eats food and spits it out. Pisses on the floor. Just all manner of strange shit.

Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence 8/10

A lot of times when I watch documentaries about mind control or cult or anything like that I think to myself “that could never be me.” A lot of times it's because everybody looks filthy and I like taking showers or they have to get weird haircuts and outfits and things like that. In this documentary Stolen Youth this could not have been me because even though I have not gone to college I could not imagine me and seven other roommates suddenly having a new roommate in the form of somebody's ex-con daddy. This is about this group of students at Sarah Lawrence College and one of the girls is like “Hey, my dad's getting out of prison you mind if he chills on the couch here?” And they all agreed that its cool! Thankfully, like with every documentary about a cult or anything like this I always look for Black people and there are none in this one.

The Review: Vacation Friends 2

Vacation Friends Two 6/10

I was reminded by L. a while back that this movie had come out. We really enjoyed the first one and while this one was funny it was a little too insane compared to the last film. Marcus and Emily are planning on having a kid and meet up with Ron and Kyla who have a son that they always leave with Maurillo who is babysitting. They go to the islands but Marcus is also using the trip to work on getting a contract so that his construction company can build a new hotel. This guy, Yeon, who is representing the company just does not like Marcus. Suddenly Kyla's dad shows up from prison and is shady as hell. He doesn't like Ron which makes no sense to him because everyone loves Ron. Ron goes out of his way to make her father like him. There are shootouts, explosions, deep sea diving, surfing, and flipping cars. Its a lot. Still, this was funnier than I expected it to be for a sequel.

The Review: American Horror Story NYC

American Horror Story NYC 9/10

This crazy ass season had everything. A psychotic leather man, dying deer, an epidemic, drug use, rough sex, and torture thrown in just a spice things up. This last season of American Horror Story: NYC seems to have some people upset and other people very happy with how the season turned out. I'm one of the people that's very happy with this season because the last few seasons have built up these huge hopes and then the payoff has been trash. I was hoping that this season wouldn't be too crammed with too much information and killers because at a certain point it seemed like the show was beginning to lose its way. Thankfully even after the death of one of the killers the show stayed interesting and I was excited to watch it every single week. L. had already started the season and I jumped in and when she would finish an episode I try to quickly watch it to catch up. This season benefited from having a lot of interesting characters and not one or two that I gave a damn about. This is going to be full of spoilers so be warned and you shouldn't be looking up stuff on the internet about shows you haven't watched yet anyway.

The Review: Killing Eve

Killing Eve 3/10

I first got into Killing Eve after watching a couple episodes at my friends aunts place. I started watching it from the start and was really digging this show. Then it just kept going...and going...and going. By the time the third season was wrapping up I felt like they were just making episodes to give the cast something to do. Also, the main character began to feel like too much of an asshole for me to enjoy watching. The fourth season debuted and I couldn't even finish the first episode so I read what happened and was glad that I saved those hours and watched Justified instead. Each season got progressively less entertaining and as if it were just spinning its wheels. I should probably describe the show a little bit. Eve is a detective that has an obsession with lady serial killers. She ends up fired and is now part of a secret team hunting who she calls Villanelle. They meet, fight, love one another, husbands are left, people are killed, plans are foiled...whatever. It is very lather, rinse, repeat and I was over it. This was a cat and mouse game where both people were cats. Sucks because this could have ended in two seasons and been fine.

the Review: Prey

Prey 9/10

I really liked this movie! I finally got a chance to watch Prey on Hulu last night and within twenty minutes realized that this was better than any Predator based movie after the second one. This is about a Comanche girl named Naru that wants to hunt but is being trained to be a healer for her people. Her brother Taabe is the best hunter around and wants her to chill out. One day she and her dog, Sarii, see some lightning in the sky. She lets people know and they kinda ignore her. Her brother brings her along to hunt a lion that attacked someone and the other guys just play along with her. Naru finds a skinned and de-spined snake and sets up a trap for the lion. The lion comes up while in a tree face to face with it they both fall to the ground and she wakes back home. Her brother brought her back and eventually kills the lion.

The Review: The Wonder Years (2021)

The Wonder Years 8/10

This was a funny ass series. When I first heard that this was going to be a thing I shit all over it because I'm a dick. I thought they were just gonna remake the show but after watching just the first episode I realized that while it takes place in the same time period as the original Wonder Years it could be a completely different series when seen through the eyes of a Black family in the same era. I laughed my ass off when the star Dean milked the death of MLK to do less work in school. The thing I enjoy more about this than the original is that I actually cared about everyone in the family and they all had their own story going. Maybe the OG show did but I don't remember them or care. The father was a musician. The mom had a job we actually got to see her at while running the home. The sister was going through wanting to be a teen and a revolutionary. Dean had friends and a girl he had a crush on and I noticed that he had more friends than Kevin in the original. He also seemed to be more involved in what was happening. His brother was fighting in Vietnam and he would compare himself to him as from what we have been told he was just good at everything and everyone liked him. Dean is not close to perfect and reminds me way too much of myself at times which is why I cringed so much while watching. This is on Hulu and only eight episodes which you could watch in a day but I watched it every week as it came out and got bummed when I realized it was finished. I look forward to another season.

The Review: La Brea

La Brea Season One Episode One 2/10

I knew from the trailer for this series that it would be bad but my stomach hurt and I needed something to watch so I decided to check this out on Hulu. I'll let you know now that I wont be finishing because its not good. Its maddening and funny but is supposed to be serious somehow. This is just me talking shit while I watched.

Oh god. All that damn traffic. I've been to the La Brea tar pits lots of times. It stinks but is cool. Like me.
