Theater Whore: The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner 7/10

Well, I'll be damned if I didn't enjoy this movie, The Maze Runner. I decided to check this out because there aren't many movies out that I want to see that I haven't already and this was number one at the box office and didn't look too terrible. Plus, I've already see the other teen movies based off of books like Twilight, The Hunger Games, Vampire Academy, and Divergent and figured that this couldn't be any worse.

There will be spoilers.

This starts off crazy. A 16 year old kid named Thomas played by Dylan O'Brien wakes up in a lift and shows up surrounded by a bunch of laughing dudes. My worse nightmare on film! He immediately takes off running before being stopped. People try to explain the rules to him as simply as possible. No one remembers their name at first, they call where they live the Glade, that big ass wall is a maze, and in that maze is death. So don't go there.

Of course there is a kid that is too much of an asshole, named Gally. The leader dude Alby, is pretty cool and things seem to be running smoothly. These guys don't now why they are there but it's been a few years and there seems to be no escape. Runners head into the maze to try and map it. They don't always make it back. Thomas remembers his name after getting his ass kicked and has dreams of a lab and taking tests. Later while in the woods one of the other teens attacks him. Turns out he's been bitten by something they call Grievers. They are these spiders from Hell as far as I can tell.

One day Alby and this cool kid named Minho head into the maze and don't return in time since Alby is hurt. Thomas races inside and Minho is like “Good job. You just got yourself killed!” They tie Alby up and lift him from the ground just as a Griever arrives. Thomas outruns it and eventually kills it and the group returns.

The lift where Thomas came from shows up out of nowhere and it is a girl. All the boys sprout pubes and their voices get deeper until the girl, Teresa played by Kaya Scodelario says his name and passes out. There is a note in her hand that says “She is the last one EVER.” She wakes up and flips out. Thomas calms her down. Asshole kid Gally wants everyone to pretend that the Grievers aren't coming out during the day and everything isn't going to shit. Alby gets hurt, Gally blames Thomas, and Thomas is locked away.

The other set him free and they leave Gally after a huge attack wrecks everything. Gally thinks that they should just stay, kill Thomas and Teresa, and everything will be all right. Nope! A large group of the kids head into the maze and they find out quite a bit of honked up information.

This movie was really good. I was not expecting all that much from it but it had the vibe of Lord Of The Flies meets The Running Man. This movie has some intense moments and there really isn't any slow points once it gets going. I suggest checking this one out for sure.
