Demand It!: Killer Joe, Source Code, John Dies At The End

I have been watching a lot of stuff On Demand lately and decided to make yet another category of movie reviews because of it. There’s already Babbling Old Man, DVDiculous, Theater Whore, and TV Slut.

The first film up is Killer Joe starring Matthew McConaughey as Killer Joe. He’s a cop that also kills professionally on the side. This is being called a dark comedy by many and I don’t get why. Its about a fuck up played by Emile Hirsch who owes money to bad people and decides to have his mom killed for her insurance policy. His dad Thomas Haden Church, step mom Gina Gershon, and sister Juno Temple who is strange as fuck agree and madness ensues.

This movie wasn’t terrible. I just doubt I’ll ever watch it again. It reminded me of Winter’s Bone where everyone was just so shitty and/or miserable that it brought my mood down. There is a scene at the end that I’m sure some people laughed at but to me just felt shitty. It involves a woman being beaten as her husband watches and then being forced to felate a drumstick. The ending made me go “The fuck just happen…?!” but not in a good way.

Source Code is another one of those movies that suffered from bad advertising. The trailer made it look like some chase film on a train when in fact it is more of a science fiction crime story like Déjà Vu. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Capt. Colter Stevens who awakes on a train sitting across from a woman named Christina played by Michelle Monaghan having a conversation he doesn’t remember starting. He heads to the bathroom and sees his reflection is not him and freaks out. The train explodes and he awakens in a capsule trying to figure out what the hell is happening.

He’s a part of a military program where they can take soldiers that are close to death and have them inserted into the body of someone that just died. They are trying to figure out who set off a bomb so each time he heads back into the guys body he finds more clues and lets them know. This movie is a mindfuck in all the right ways and I wish I had seen this in theaters. Check this out if you can.

John Dies At The End was first a series of stories, made into a book, and then a movie. Its about a guy named Dave that ends up taking a drug that makes him able to see things in the world that none of us can such as the undead, monsters, and creatures. His friends John dies and is still able to communicate with him in various ways including through a canine and a hotdog. Its that kinda film.

This was a really fun movie to watch and one I know I’ll watch if its ever on. The acting is so crazy and has a great cast including Clancy Brown and Paul Giamotti who is a Black man. You’ll have to watch it for that last sentence to make sense. The effects are good enough to not snatch you out the film and the characters are very likable and funny. See this is you can.
