Demand It!: Locke

I watched the movie Locke starring Tom Hardy. I had no idea what this movie was about but ended up really digging it. He plays a guy named Ivan Locke that is in his car getting phone calls the entire time. He is talking to coworkers, his wife, his son, as well as a chick on the side that he got pregnant that decided to keep the baby.

Demand It!: Under The Skin

I hate these kind of films. What kind? Ones that you have to “get.” The ones that if you don't like it people trash you and question your opinion on every film that you say you enjoy. Under The Skin stars Scarlett Johansson as an alien that seduces men and then kills them. When I say it like that it sounds good until you realize that most of this “movie” is her driving and taking to terrible actors. Turns out they were real guys. It takes place in Scotland where the decision was made to say “Fuck it” to subtitles. The director also did Sexy Beast which was awesome but it was as if he took everything I didn't enjoy about that movie (drawn out scenes) and stretch it even further.

Demand It!: The After

While checking for something to watch after seeing The Avengers for the 8th time I stumbled across a show called The After. It was created by Chris Carter of X-Files fame for Amazon in the hopes of being voted for and picked up as a series. This is the story of a bunch of people trying to survive...something. I'm not quite sure what the hell happened to the city (maybe the world) but whatever it is, shit's wrecked.

So many spoilers.

It starts off with this married mother going to an audition. On the way out she gets stuck in an elevator with a gay clown, an asshole with an accent, an old lady, and a cop. The elevator gets stuck and they eventually are able to escape. They end up in a parking lot where they are joined by an asshole lawyer and some chick he is boning.

Demand It!: The Signal

The Signal is a movie that deserved far better attention than it got from everyone including me. I saw a trailer for this on Youtube and wanted to check it out because I'm a fan of Laurence Fishburne. So I decided to watch this while ironing clothes for no reason and this turned out to be a really good sci-fi movie.

These three MIT students are on a trip to drop their friend and Nic's former girlfriend Haley off in California. Jonah and Nic are busy battling a hacker named NOMAD who ends up hacking into Haley's computer and shows that they are watching them. They freak out but still track the hacker into a pace in Nevada and decided in the middle of the damned night to pay a visit. Such a bad idea.

Demand It!: Hand Of God

Amazon has a series of original shows where they have just the pilot and you go online and vote for which ones you want to watch as a regular series. The one I watched and fell in love with is called Hand Of God and it stars Ron Perlman as a corrupt ass judge named Pernell Harris. This guy is dirty as hell and proud of it.

One day he is found bathing in a parks lake by police. They are trying to keep the whole thing covered up but he is clearly not handling his sons attempted suicide well. His son witnessed his own wife being raped while he was forced to watch. Pernell refuses to let the slow wheels of justice grind and decides to be saved at a small church run by Paul Curtis, a washed up soap star, played by Julian Morris. This guy is obviously dirty as well and gladly accepts Pernell's $50,000 “donation.” He gets a visit from Pernell's wife Crystal Harris played by Dana Delaney who grabs his dick and threatens him. She is not fucking around and will do whatever she needs to to make sure Pernell stays clean in the public eye.

Demand It!: I Know That Voice

I Know That Voice

I watched this documentary called I Know That Voice on Amazon a couple of days ago. This had been floating in the back of my head ever since Andrew Kishino (himself a very accomplished voice over artist) had mentioned it a while back. I'm so glad that I watched this because it taught me a lot about voice over work as well as pointed out that it's not as easy as just being able to do an impression of a character for your friends and family.

They of course cover the history of voices in animation including the king himself, Mel Blanc. It is incredible how many voices he was able to do like Bugs Bunny, Wile E. Coyote (my favorite cartoon character of all time), Porky Pig, and Daffy Duck just to name very few. Mark Hamill who is best known as the voice of the Joker from multiple animated Batman films is interviewed as well as those who have followed him.

Demand It!: Street Fighter Assassins Fist

The other day while trolling the internets I found this Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist on Youtube that came out the previous week that I had no idea about. It was done by the same guys that did this cool, like, two minute short a few years back. This time they broke it down into multiple parts or you can watch the whole thing on DVD/BluRay and you should because it's pretty damned amazing.

It is the story of Ken and Ryu being trained to become the fighters that they are as well as the story of their master and Akuma who if you don't know is the baddest son of a bitch on the planet. The story goes back and forth between the present and the arrival of Ken to the dojo where he meets a young Ryu. Ken hates everything and is a spoiled ass kid who gets humbled by Ryu immediately. Also shown is their master's training as well as his brother who thirsts for more power who eventually becomes Akuma.

Demand It!: Welcome To the Jungle

I heard about this movie Welcome To The Jungle coming out last week and I absolutely had to see it. I like ridiculous and that is exactly what this movie is. What's funny is that there are two parts within one minute using the same gag that made me jump. Scary movies don't even do that. This stars Adam Brody as Chris. He works at an advertising agency where pretty much everyone is a weirdo and he feels stuck in his position. 

This asshole Phil played by Rob Huebel who steals his pitch and everyone now thinks is a hero. Enter Jean-Claude Van Damme!

Chris and his co-workers are told that they will be going on a two day retreat on team building. JCVD plays a guy named Storm Rothchild who says he has a ton of combat and survival experience. Chris immediately pisses him off. They are all put on a cargo plane with a pilot that goes to sit with them when he boards the plane. Chris gets in trouble for smoking pot even though it was actually his friend Jared played by Eric Edelstein. They get to this wild island and Storm has them do some screaming to unleash their inner wild man. Phil kicks up his super asshole behavior to brand new levels.

Demand It!: Big Ass Spider

I heard about this movie On Demand and in theaters called Big Ass Spider. The title alone meant that I had to see this especially since it was about stupid nature getting shot at. I'm not a fan of wild things (Dante Vs Nature) and this movie is full of it. Well, one big ass spider. It wouldn't be fair to call this a B-movie because the story is actually as good as any big budget action film that gets cranked out and yawned at by me. This movie had me laughing and cheering at my screen which is totally normal when you live alone.

Greg Grunberg who you may know from Felicity or Heroes plays Alex Mathis who works for Western Exterminators. Not sure if this company is in other parts of the country but here in Los Angeles you see their trucks quite often. Alex loves his job and on his day off goes to catch something an old lady trapped. A brown recluse (which is also my stripper name) climbs on him and she smacks it into his arm stinging him. He ends up at the hospital and a body is brought in. A spider climbs out of the body and attacks the mortician freaking everyone out.

Demand It!: Hell Baby

Sometimes I read movie reviews and I just say to myself “These people are some miserable ass mofos.” There are movies where I know what I'm getting into before I get started and that is my way of signing off to nonsense. This movie, Hell Baby, was a giant ball of entertaining nonsense. Just look at the damned poster. If that isn't some kinda tip that this is gonna be out there look at the work of writers/directors Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. They have worked on Balls Of Fury, Reno 911, Night At The Museum, and Taxi (which even they admit is terrible).

This movie is silly as fuck. I mean that in the best way possible. Its very silly, parts made me laugh, some made me laugh then stop laughing, then start laughing all over again, and there were genuine jump scares which even actual horrors films don't make me experience. This movie had moments where you would get into jump scare overload and then get used to it and laugh and suddenly get scared again! At one point someone actually screams “I am tired of being startled!”

Demand It!: Killer Joe, Source Code, John Dies At The End

I have been watching a lot of stuff On Demand lately and decided to make yet another category of movie reviews because of it. There’s already Babbling Old Man, DVDiculous, Theater Whore, and TV Slut.

The first film up is Killer Joe starring Matthew McConaughey as Killer Joe. He’s a cop that also kills professionally on the side. This is being called a dark comedy by many and I don’t get why. Its about a fuck up played by Emile Hirsch who owes money to bad people and decides to have his mom killed for her insurance policy. His dad Thomas Haden Church, step mom Gina Gershon, and sister Juno Temple who is strange as fuck agree and madness ensues.
