The Review: IO

IO 1/10

I decided to check this movie on Netflix called IO out. Not sure why really. Just something to do. It is pretty lame. This woman named Sam Walden played by Margaret Qualley lives by herself doing science shit. The planet is gone. Like, all the people have left except for a few and there is one ship left to leave for IO and live. She has a boyfriend or something she writes to who is already in space living that life. She is carrying on her father's research and then one day a guy named Micah played by Anthony Mackie shows up in a hot air balloon looking for her father. Her boyfriend breaks up with her, it turns out her father died years ago, and the last ship is leaving soon. They end up in a forced relationship that felt creepy because she looks like a kid and he looks like a grown ass man. This movie was not long but felt long. And boring. Not sure what vibe they were going for. Even Mackie's acting seemed off. When he got upset it felt like he was acting. The setting looked nice though. I will say that.

Theater Whore: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier 9/10

After watching Captain America: The Winter Soldier I kept asking myself why this movie was so damned good. Out of all of the Marvel films the Cap ones have been the best. It could be the fact that there is no hype about who is directing it. Do you know who directed the first film? I didn't and never bothered to check until I was writing this. But with the films like Iron Man, X-Men, and The Avengers, who directed it has become such a big deal. But two brothers, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, who have done nothing but TV shows and movies I've never seen managed to create what could be argued as one of the best action/adventure/comic book films ever.

Chris Evans returns as Captain America and is questioning many of the methods being used by SHIELD. His suspicions match up perfectly with what has been happening on Agents Of SHIELD which is pretty cool. By the way, if you gave up on that show the way I did a while back, the last seven episodes leading to the upcoming finally have been great. Cap is still looking at the world as if it is the 1940's and a simpler time while Nick Fury played by Samuel L. Jackson tries to let him know that the world is far more dangerous and different than he knows.

Theater Whore: Runner Runner

I wasn't dying to see this new movie Runner Runner but I like Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake appeals to my gay side so I decided to give it a try. I wasn't quite sure what it was about besides poker which I've played two times and discovered that I have absolutely no poker face whatsoever. But this isn't about real poker. Its online poker which I absolutely don't understand why people play. This is about Timberlake's character Richie Furst which is so not a real name getting in trouble in college for helping an online gambling company. He is told to stop so bets all his money college money on a site called Midnight Black and discovers that they are cheating.

This part confused me. This guy who is broke has the money, after losing it all, still is able to book a flight to Costa Rica, rent a room, and have enough pull to get a face to face with Affleck's Ivan Block. Yeah. That happened. So Block feels bad for Furst being ripped off and fires the team that ripped him off and hires him just like that.

Richie is doing well and getting in deep with all this nonsense when of course he meets a woman named Rebecca that seems to be the neighborhood doorknob. He gets with her, Block is all like “I see you met a new friend!” and she is all “Tee-hee!” and Furst is all “Derp! Latina Vagina!” which is totally a thing.

Theater Whore: Gangster Squad

I am listening to a review for Gangster Squad as I am writing this and I am wondering if they were in a bad mood when they saw this or even saw it. I’m not a movie critic. I’m just a dude that likes seeing movies and writing about them. I never wanna be at the point where I overanalyze the shit out of a movie and cant just enjoy it the way these guys at Spill are. Its as if they watched it writing down jokes just to use later and that’s a disservice for people who like their reviews and value their opinion. Enough about them!

I saw this with East over at the Arclight last night and I loved this movie. Let me just get that out of the way. It was more than I expected and had a lot of actors that I didn’t know were in it. I intentionally didn’t read up about this, choosing to go in blind. This is the story of a team of cops that are brought together by Josh Brolin to take down a Chicago gangster played by Sean Penn that is ruining the city. Nick Nolte plays the police chief that assigns Brolin the task of doing this though his wife is the one that tells him that he needs less clean cut cops.
