Theater Whore: The Skin I Live In

First off I have to let you all know that I will be spoiling the bejeezus out of this movie. So if you haven’t seen it and stop reading right now. Or if you’re one of those people that can read spoilers and not care then enjoy yourself. I had no interest in seeing this because the trailer looked very bland. But damn I am glad I watched it now!

The movie stars Antonio Banderas as Robert Ledgard, a surgeon who has perfected a new form of skin grafting that would help with burn victims. He says that he has tested it on animals but for real he has been testing it on this hot ass chick played by Elena Ayana named Vera that he has locked in a room. She just tears cloth, does pottery, and yoga all day.

Robert’s servant Marilia is at home and minding her damned business after having fired all the help. She’s becoming more and more concerned with Robert because the chick locked up looks like his late wife. More on her later.

When regular creepy doesn't work there's always super creepy.

This guy dressed in a tiger costume (its Carnivale) uses the call box and says he wants to see his mother. He followed Robert home and knows that his mom, Marilia, is there. She lets him in and they sit down for a nice meal. That is until they watch the news and see that he committed a robbery and wants to hide out.

Zeca sees Vera on a screen and ends up breaking into her room. He has his mother tied up and tries to have sex with Vera. She tells him that she will willingly have sex with her. And he does. Badly. Robert comes home and watches a passed out Zeca on top of Vera. He shoots him dead while Marilia tries to will him to kill Vera as well. He doesn’t because she’s, well, smoking hot. He ends up trying to have sex with her later (ew!) but she cant because her vagina is wrecked from Zeca earlier (ultra ew!).

Marilia tells Vera that she is Robert and Zeca’s mom from different men. She has never told the two of them that though. It turns out that Robert’s wife and Zeca had a fling and one day their car crashed which burned her and left Zeca with his scars. One day while healing from her burns she saw her reflection and killed herself in front of her daughter who is also Robert’s daughter. The daughter snapped after this.

Through a flashback years before this dude named Vincent who works at his mom’s thrift store ends up going to this wedding party that Robert and his just taken out of an institution daughter goes to. Vincent ends up raping her and escapes after she hears a song from her childhood and flips out. Vincent sees him race away on a motorcycle.

Robert ends up tracking Vincent down and knocks him from his motorcycle and keeps him locked in a basement of sorts. He ignores his cries for help and eventually feeds and clothes him. One day while shaving him he knocks him out and ties him down for surgery. What kind of surgery, you ask?

Sexual re-fucking-assignment!!!

His surgical team thinks it’s a normal procedure and Robert tells them its all confidential. He starts by removing his penis and giving him a vagina. Okay let me stop for a second. This scene made me scream out loud “Oh, holy shit!” because I’m Black and we talk at screens. Robert visits his daughter and she cant even be around men. She associates her father with her rape and ends up killing herself.

Vera/Vincent ends up fighting back after being shown all the lovely objects he/she will have to use to keep his/her vagina from sealing shut. Vera slits her throat and Robert manages to just save her. Back in normal time Robert and Vera are lovers. His friend, from the original surgery, puts two and two together after seeing a picture of a missing man, Vincent, from years ago. Robert tells him he’s full of shit and Vera shows up and lies saying she did it all on her own free will.

Now together and happy and ready to fuck, Vera heads downstairs to get lube (I’m not making this up) and brings a gun shooting Robert in the heart. Marilia hears the gunshot and gets her gun. She bursts into the room and is shot dead by Vera who takes off and finds her mother’s old shop and confesses to her old co-worker and “his” mom who “she” really is.

This movie was just…aah! It was so cool and unpredictable until the very end. If you read all of this and still want to see it, do it! You will not regret seeing this film and I’m pissed I missed it when it first came out. Also pissed that no one is even talking about it.
