Theater Whore: Safe House

If you love seeing Ryan Reynolds winking at the camera and strutting around with his shirt off…this is not the movie for you. He gets fucked up in this movie. A lot. 70% of this film is watching him, as Matt Weston, looking like he’s ready to drop dead any second. Denzel Washington as Tobin Frost on the other hand actually finds the time to clean up and get a haircut.

In South Africa Weston works alone at a safe house. It’s a place to hold dangerous people until the government comes and gets them. One day Frost is brought in because he has a file that has some information about every agency and the dirty shit they’ve done. He gets tortured but doesn’t break. Next thing you know…chaos!

"I said go see Green Lantern!"

That’s pretty much it until the end. The entire movie is the two of them being together, something splitting them up, then they’re back together. There’s one scene where Weston takes him to a stadium and Frost starts screaming that he’s being held hostage and they both get arrested. Minutes later Frost has killed a room full of people and gets away for a while.

Don't ask Reynolds about the Deadpool movie.

Frost tells Weston everything that is going to happen. Weston doesn’t believe him until shit starts coming true. Even the part where Weston knows that he is fucked when the CIA tells him “We’ll take it from here.” I sat screaming at the screen in my head because I’m not an asshole for Weston to sit down and think about the situation he was in. There was no way for it to end well.

Denzel knows you looking at his ass...sir.

But of course it does because it’s a movie and its not French where bad shit always happens. I wasn’t happy with the ending but it was okay. I like seeing Reynolds in movies where he plays it straight like that one Buried which is a great film. And Denzel is as awesome as usual.
