TV Slut: Young Justice
I would have never found out about this cartoon if a friend hadn’t started posting links from Youtube (click to watch episodes 1 & 2) since a few years ago I said “No more!” to the oppressive cable gods. Young Justice is rare in that it’s a watchable cartoon. I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not but for almost a decade now cartoons have been utter shit. Many of my friends have heard my tirades regarding the crap kids have to watch. Big eyed girls dressing like hookers, dragons in wheelchairs, and pets getting the Michael Vick treatment are all that’s on TV.
The last new cartoons I was able to enjoy were Recess and Kim Possible (which you should not Google unless you need to see what thousands of fucking perverts have done to a teenage cartoon character).
Naked mole rats equal comedy.
I really don’t know why there aren’t more cartoons like Young Justice on every channel. It takes a basic idea of a team of superheroes and has them kick the ass of villains every week. The animation is good, the voices are great, and out of the ten episodes that have aired only one was just okay. The rest were awesome.
The team consists of Robin, who is the tech geek who tries his best to be like Batman. His vanishing act is awesome and always upsets his team. Also the fact that he always refuses to expose his secret identity to his team. Kid Flash is made interesting for once. Characters that run fast can get old pretty quickly but they manage to keep him fresh with his personality. Aqualad is the leader. That’s right, I said it. They took a character that I couldn’t give a damn about and not only made him badass, but made him the leader of the team.
M’Gann M’Orzz is the niece of The Martian Manhunter. When she first arrived I had my doubts until she started whipping ass. She brings the most humanity to the team which is odd since she is from another planet. Artemis who later joins the team is cool but hiding a jacked up secret. No, she is not a man. I’d feel so bad for Kid Flash if she were. “Goodbye horses…”
The heavyweight of the team is Conner Kent aka Superboy. His storyline is awesome in that Superman completely disregards him! When he meets him for the first time Superman is like “Uh, oh. Look at the time!” and leaves him. Batman even had to pull him aside and say “Look, dude. You’re gonna have to deal with this shit.” Aren’t you glad I don’t write comics?
“Dude, I fucking rule so hard…”
Seeing how these young heroes behave around their adult counterparts is fun. Robin always trying to impress Batman. Aqualad being noble with Aquaman. Superboy being neglected by Superman. Kid Flash and all of his family that belong with the speed force. It all makes for good television. If you don’t have Cartoon Network find this show online. Its totally worth watching.
