"Bad Mamma Jamma": Julianne Moore

Known for being one of the most versatile actresses going Julianne Moore is this weeks Bad Mamma Jamma! Can you believe she is 52 and looks better than most actresses in their 20’s? Don’t even get me started on talent levels. I’d wreck it. And by it I mean her…ironing board. What did you think I was talking about? Really? Wow. Just when you think you know someone. Born Julie Anne Smith to a paratrooper father and psychiatrist and social worker mother, she bounced around the country not staying at one place for long. Except my bed. What?

Moore got her start on As The World Turns for which she won multiple awards before moving on to films like The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, The Gun In Betty Lou’s Handbag, The Fugitive, Nine Months, and of course Boogie Nights where she was nominated for a shit ton of awards. That same year she starred in The Lost World: Jurassic Park where she helped prove that dinosaurs are fucked up. The next year she was in one of my favorite films of all time The Big Lebowski.

The Rant Zone Episode 21

In this episode I cover the Top 12 movies at the box office and reviews of The Last Stand, Gangster Squad, Silver Linings Playbook. Click here to download this and previous Rant Zones and here for iTunes.

Theater Whore: Silver Linings Playbook

What do you get when you combine Bradley Cooper who I’m not a fan of, Jennifer Lawrence who is dead behind her eyes, Robert Di Niro who hasn’t made a good film in years, and grab Chris Tucker from under whatever rock he’s been hiding under and mix them together for a film? An okay movie. Silver Linings Playbook is a movie I waited to see not just because I didn’t really want to see it, but because its been so raved about there’s no way it could live up to the hype. I went into this calm and open minded which you all know is hard for me to do. I’m judgmental as hell.

Cooper gets let out of treatment for bipolar disorder after being there for eight months by his mom. He’s supposed to be there later but she checks him out because she thinks he’s been there long enough. A guy he meets there played by Tucker tries to come along but it turns out he wasn’t allowed to leave just yet. He gets home and everyone comments on how much weight he has lost and upon meeting his dad sees all of his OCD behavior involving Eagles football.

Cooper is supposed to stay away from his “wife” and take his medication which he doesn’t believe he needs and that his wife will take him back once she sees how better he is. He goes to therapy finally and loses his shit when he hears “My Cherie Amour” by Stevie Wonder. The song is a trigger since he caught his wife banging a co-worker in the shower and he beat the hell out of the guy. He continues to say he doesn’t need medication and thinks that he is better and can control himself. He does a lot of self affirmation and honesty with people where he comes across like a dick.

"Bad Ass Mofo": Forest Whitaker

I’m not sure why I never wrote about this guy. This guy has played everything from sympathetic guys, guys you felt bad for, and even hardasses that made you nervous as hell. Forest Whitaker is this weeks Bad Ass Mofo! Born in Longview, Texas he and his family said “Fuck this place!” and moved to Los Angeles when he was 4 years old. He is an accomplished actor, producer and director. Did you know that he directed Waiting To Exhale? Well, he did.

His first movie (that counts) was Fast Times At Ridgemont High as a beast of a football player. He was almost not cast because he looked too nice and the director didn’t think he could pull off angry. He went on to be in films like Platoon, The Crying Game, Jason’s Lyric, Phone Booth, and Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai. Now, with this film I was offered a free screening and turned it down because seeing Whitaker with a samurai sword in New York didn’t appeal to me. Fast forward to it being the first film I ever bought on DVD.

Theater Whore: Gangster Squad

I am listening to a review for Gangster Squad as I am writing this and I am wondering if they were in a bad mood when they saw this or even saw it. I’m not a movie critic. I’m just a dude that likes seeing movies and writing about them. I never wanna be at the point where I overanalyze the shit out of a movie and cant just enjoy it the way these guys at Spill are. Its as if they watched it writing down jokes just to use later and that’s a disservice for people who like their reviews and value their opinion. Enough about them!

I saw this with East over at the Arclight last night and I loved this movie. Let me just get that out of the way. It was more than I expected and had a lot of actors that I didn’t know were in it. I intentionally didn’t read up about this, choosing to go in blind. This is the story of a team of cops that are brought together by Josh Brolin to take down a Chicago gangster played by Sean Penn that is ruining the city. Nick Nolte plays the police chief that assigns Brolin the task of doing this though his wife is the one that tells him that he needs less clean cut cops.

DVDiculous: Dark Knight Returns Part 2

Yay! That’s all I have to say after watching Dark Knight Returns Part 2. And so concludes this review! The way the first one ended with the Joker smiling and coming out of his comatose state was nuts so I couldn’t wait to see this one. Well, Joker wakes his crazy ass up and his therapist thinks it’d be a good idea to have him appear on TV to show that he is a better person now. This is the part where we all wait for people to die.

Meanwhile the President is all “Batman is starting shit. Take him out, Superman!” Supes is being used as a secret weapon by the government and using him to fight their battles. Batman is busy beating up a giant boobed monster chick when Superman shows up ruining everything and tells him that they need to have a chat. They do and Batman pretty much tells him to stick it up his ass, Batman ain’t gonna stop. And why should he? Superman looks like a chump and a half being all “Oh, you’re making too much noise…” Go pick some flowers, ya weirdo.

Theater Whore: The Last Stand

I have heard and read some reviews for this movie that blatantly prove that folks don't actually watch the movies they are reviewing. “Arnold deputizes Johnny Knoxville and madness ensues!” While that does occur its such a small part of all the crazy shit that happens in this movie. It'd be like saying “Sigourney Weaver and Bill Paxton head into space and crazy things happen!” This movie, The Last Stand, was far better than I thought it was gonna be. The trailer made it look like a stupid buddy cop film where a small town is in danger. Nope. This film is violent as fuck.

This drug lord that is gonna be executed Gabriel Cortez played by Eduardo Noriega is being taken to die by Forrest Whitaker and a bunch of cops until he makes the most ridiculous escape ever. I mean, this was ConAir levels of crazy reminiscent of a Wile E. Coyote cartoon. A giant magnet picks up his truck, cops are killed, he gets away, and kidnaps an agent played by Genesis Rodriguez. I mean, if you're gonna kidnap a chick kidnap the hottest one, right? He also happens to be in the fastest car ever. This thing goes faster than helicopters!

The Rant Zone Show 20

This week I cover the Top 12 movies of the weekend, Amour, Rust And Bone, and Lincoln. Click here to download this show and previous Rant Zones. Also, click here to subscribe on iTunes!

"Bad Ass Mofo": Bill Paxton

The fact that I’ve done as many of these and have not mention Bill Paxton is a travesty. This guy has done roles that either made me laugh, cringe, or laugh at him. He can go from being a sleaze ball like in True Lies or the world’s most terrifying father in the thriller Frailty. I present to you this weeks Bad Ass Mofo!

"Don't worry, boy. Everything is gonna be just fine..."

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Paxton managed to escape the second scariest state in the country and become a star. He has been in blockbuster films like Titanic, Apollo 13, and Terminator. If you don’t remember him in that look him up. It was during the 80’s when he seemed like he had lost his damned mind. Don’t believe me, check him out in Near Dark with equally insane previous BAM Lance Henrikson and Bad Mamma Jamma Jenette Golstein. He was the battiest damned vampire ever.

Theater Whore: Amour and Rust And Bone

Another year goes by and me and Cam decide to check out some more Oscar films. This time we decided t add on to A Royal Affair by seeing a couple of films nominated for Best Foreign Film. A few things I know about foreign films is that people die, people will be in fucked up situation, there will be all kinds of nudity, and I will leave confused at something I saw.

The first film we saw was a French one called Amour. I know that its been getting a lot of talk but I had no idea what it was about except that old people were in it. Which meant that someone had to die.

Oh, and there will be spoilers.

Gossip & Shit: January 16th 2013

Eddie Furlong is in jail once again for domestic violence. This is the third time in as many months. I cant believe it’s the same damned chick he keeps attacking. He’s been canned from a movie he was making since they don’t know if his ass will be in jail or not.

Kobe Bryant and his wife Vanessa announced that they will not be divorcing. So homely White girls working in hotels across America can breathe a sigh of relief.

Britney Spears and her fiance who even if I named him you would have no idea who he was have split. This is right when she is done with X Factor Voice Idol and planning a Vegas show. I smell crazy 'round the corner...

Theater Whore: Lincoln

I do not know history. Its not that I hated it or anything, I just wasn’t taught it properly We glanced past Columbus, breezed through slavery, and always managed to end around Prohibition. So whatever you can tell me about history, even if you said that dragons once roamed Montana, I’d probably believe you. So as I sat and watched the movie Lincoln most of what was being shown and said was new to me.

I spoke with Cam after watching the movie together and decided that this movie was a perfect example of why I needed to start doing my reviews differently. I tend to recap and entire damned film and attempt to not spoil the ending. Well, this stuff already happened and hopefully anyone reading this knows that slaves are free. Just in case you didn’t know allow me to state that us Blacks are free and the first thing we want are your women! I should probably talk about the movie before I get my ass returned to Africa.
