Theater Whore: Tangled

Last night I watched the 2010 movie Tangled for the first time. Some of my friends know that I am a hater of technology, specifically computers that have replaced people putting pencil to paper and drawing by hand. The last CGI movie I thoroughly enjoyed was The Incredibles. Damn, that was good. So I was hesitant to watch tangled, especially since Disney has been putting out pretty crap films for years now. I decided to give this a try though. So glad I did.

This stars Mandy Moore (Romance & Cigarettes, Southland Tales, Saved!) as Rapunzel. Her mother was dying while giving birth to her and the people of the kingdom knew of a magic flower that was given by the sun and decided to give it to her to help. It did and their daughter was born with beautiful golden hair. She is kidnapped as a baby by a witch who had been using the flower to stay young played by Donna Murphy (Spiderman 2, World Trade Center, The Fountain) as Mother Gothel. She raises Rapunzel in a high tower and never allows her to leave. Gothel had to sing to the flower for its magic to work. Now Rapunzel has to sing to use the magic to help her stay young.

Rapunzel starts to get sick of living in the tower with her pet chameleon and wants to explore the world. Gothel tells her how evil the world really is and scares her into staying. Meanwhile a thief played by Zachary Levi (Chuck, Less Than Perfect) is Flynn Rider, a thief who has stolen the guarded crown of the stolen princess. Yeah, Rapunzel. While escaping and tricking his thief friends her finds the castle while being chased by a horse that is like the damn Terminator. He is knocked out multiple times by Rapunzel with a frying pan. She tells him that she will give him his stolen crown if she takes her out the tower.

After much chasing and double-double crosses Rapunzel gets to the castle where she wants to see these lights that appear every year on her birthday. She ends up getting captured by her mother who is sick of having her want to leave and stabs Flynn in the ribs. One of the side effects of Rapunzel having her hair cut is that where it is cut it does not grow back and turns brown. After that, no magic. And without any magic to help that means the old witch will have to die.

Rapunzel promises to help her mother forever (and she never breaks a promise) if she lets her heal Flynn. Just as she is about to heal him he grabs the knifes and cuts all her hair. Not all, but about 30 feet of it. With no magic hair Mother Gothel loses her shit and ends up falling out the window to her death. I swear, Disney loves having villains fall to their deaths! Rapunzel cries and her tear is magic and heals Flynn. They even show it. Rapunzel and Flynn head to the castle and she finally gets to see her parents for the first time ever. Great movie and she looked better with short hair.

Loved TANGLED! It has everything you need in a movie!! Humor, suspense, drama, and Romance! I thought the cinema-photography was excellent. It reminded me of the days when Disney had some classics like Sleeping Beauty and this was this generations version of that in a way! :) Glad you saw the movie and critiqued it. YOU Are a Film Whore! lol :)

It was a really good film and surprised me. Some films because they are computer generated rely more on that fact and don't tell an interesting story. This one managed to and that was cool. And I am a Theater Whore. Not Film Whore. Hmph!
